Manchester United have opened talks with Bruno Fernandes over a new contract after Galatasaray launched an ambitious attempt to prise the club captain away from Old Trafford.
The Turkish champions are reportedly offering the Portugal international a four-year package worth around £18.3million per season tax-free, plus a £3million signing-on bonus. A transfer offer of around £42.8million had also been under consideration.
Despite the enormous financial incentive, Fernandes has indicated that his preference is to remain at Manchester United.
United make their position clear
The 31-year-old has entered the final year of his current Old Trafford contract, although United have an option to extend it by another 12 months.
According to The Sun, preliminary discussions over a new deal have already taken place, with United keen to secure the long-term future of one of their most influential players.
There is not thought to be immediate pressure to complete the negotiations because of the additional year available to the club.
Fernandes signed his existing contract in 2024, while a £57million release clause for overseas clubs expired last month.
United have no intention of entertaining offers for their captain and have not received a concrete approach from Galatasaray despite the Turkish club’s interest.
Galatasaray president Dursun Ozbek is believed to have played a major role in the pursuit and remains determined to pull off what would be a sensational transfer.
Fernandes turns 32 next month and could significantly increase his take-home earnings by moving to Istanbul because of Turkey’s tax system. However, money has failed to tempt him away from Manchester before.
Fernandes has rejected big-money moves before
Galatasaray are not the first club to try to lure Fernandes away from Old Trafford.
The midfielder previously rejected lucrative approaches from Saudi Arabia. He revealed last year that he had been left “hurt” by his perception that United’s hierarchy were prepared to consider selling him.
Al Hilal had made an enquiry worth around £100million and were reportedly prepared to offer Fernandes as much as £700,000 per week.
He ultimately stayed in Manchester, with former United boss Ruben Amorim playing an important role in convincing him to remain and see whether the club could achieve his ambitions.
Fernandes has continued to underline his importance to the team.
A key figure for United
The Portugal star played a pivotal role in helping Manchester United secure Champions League football and was named Premier League Player of the Season following another influential campaign.
His future has still remained a source of speculation this summer, with Juventus and AC Milan also linked with potential moves.
United’s decision to open contract talks comes as the club faces scrutiny over its transfer activity.
Despite returning to Europe’s elite competition, United have so far spent around £85million on two major additions, bringing Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos to Old Trafford.
For now, though, the message from United appears clear: Bruno Fernandes is not for sale. 🔴
