$100,000. ONE FINAL QUESTION. THEN MICHAEL CHANGED HIS ANSWER WITH SECONDS LEFT. The 1% Club Australia finalist was still battling a bizarre months-of-the-year sequence as the clock raced toward zero when he suddenly abandoned his original answer and made one desperate last-second switch. With Jim Jefferies watching and a life-changing jackpot hanging in the balance, the correct answer appeared—and instantly turned those final few seconds into one of the most nerve-racking finishes of the night.

The 1% Club Contestant Changes His Answer at the Last Second — and Wins $100,000 With One Brutal Month Puzzle

“Okay, your time is up!” Jefferies said.

A contestant on The 1% Club Australia turned one of the show’s most difficult questions into a $100,000 victory — but only after changing his answer with almost no time left on the clock.

Michael had just 30 seconds to solve the final one percent question, a numerical sequence built around the months of the year. The pattern was simple once explained, but under studio pressure it proved difficult enough to leave plenty of viewers completely stumped.

Even Michael was not convinced he had cracked it.

He entered one answer, reconsidered, and then changed it in the final seconds before time expired.

When host Jim Jefferies asked whether he was happy with the switch, Michael’s response made clear how uncertain he still felt.

“I hope so.”

Moments later, the correct answer appeared. His gamble had worked. Michael had just won $100,000 AUD.

The Final Question Put $100,000 on the Line

Man is asked 'one of hardest questions ever' on 1% Club and gets it spot on

The Australian version of The 1% Club follows the same basic format as the British original.

One hundred contestants begin the game and face a series of questions designed to test logic, observation and common sense rather than conventional general knowledge.

The questions are ranked according to how many members of the public answered them correctly during testing.

As contestants progress, the percentage becomes smaller and the puzzles become more demanding.

Reaching the final one percent question means facing a problem that only one percent of the surveyed public managed to solve.

For Michael, successfully answering that last challenge meant the chance to walk away with the full $100,000 AUD prize.

Then Jefferies revealed the puzzle:

“If January equals 717, March equals 5315 and June equals 4624, then what does August equal?”

The clock immediately began counting down from 30 seconds.

Michael Had to Find the Pattern Before Time Ran Out

The 1% Club contestant wins huge jackpot prize after answering 'hardest question ever'

At first glance, the sequence appears almost arbitrary.

January equals 717.

March equals 5315.

June equals 4624.

Michael needed to determine what those numbers represented and then apply the same rule to August.

He had only half a minute to do it.

As the timer continued, Jefferies warned him when 15 seconds remained.

Michael kept working.

Then came another warning with only five seconds left.

The pressure was now obvious.

Michael had already entered an answer, but something about it did not feel right.

Rather than stick with his first instinct, he made one final adjustment.

The timer reached zero almost immediately afterward.

“Okay, your time is up!” Jefferies announced.

The host noted just how close Michael had taken it, telling him the attempt had gone “down to the wire.”

Then Michael revealed something that made the moment even more tense.

He had changed his answer.

His First Answer Was 686

The contestant answered the $100,000 question bang-on.

Jefferies asked Michael whether he felt confident about the last-second decision.

Michael did not pretend to know.

“I hope so,” he replied.

His final answer was 6848.

But that was not the number he had originally entered.

Michael revealed that his first answer had been 686.

Had he left it unchanged, the game would have ended very differently.

Instead, the correct answer appeared on screen:

6848.

Michael had solved it.

The studio immediately erupted in applause as Jefferies confirmed the result.

“Congratulations, Michael!”

“You have won $100,000 – welcome to the 1% Club!”

The last-second change had turned out to be worth the entire jackpot.

The Trick Was Hidden in the Month Names

Once the solution was explained, the strange sequence became much easier to understand.

Each answer combines three pieces of information.

The first digit represents the number of letters in the name of the month.

The next number represents that month’s position in the calendar.

The final part is the result of multiplying those first two numbers together.

Take January.

“January” contains seven letters.

January is the first month of the year.

Seven multiplied by one equals seven.

That produces:

7 – 1 – 7, or 717.

March contains five letters and is the third month.

Five multiplied by three equals 15.

That gives:

5 – 3 – 15, or 5315.

June contains four letters and is the sixth month.

Four multiplied by six equals 24.

That produces:

4 – 6 – 24, or 4624.

Once the rule is understood, August follows exactly the same pattern.

Why August Equals 6848

“August” contains six letters.

It is the eighth month of the year.

Six multiplied by eight equals 48.

Put the three components together:

6 – 8 – 48.

The answer is therefore:

6848.

Michael had managed to spot that complete pattern before the 30-second clock expired.

His original answer, 686, appears to have captured part of the logic but missed the final multiplication result.

Changing it to 6848 in the final moments was the decision that secured the jackpot.

Viewers Found the Puzzle Far Harder Than It Looked

After the clip circulated online, viewers admitted that Michael had managed something many of them could not do even without the pressure of being on television.

One TikTok user said it took almost ten minutes to work out the answer, adding that there would have been no chance of solving it within 30 seconds.

Another joked:

“I’m in the zero % club because I’ve got zero chance of answering that.”

A third simply praised Michael’s performance, writing:

“Wow, impressive. I did not get that one.”

The reactions demonstrate one of the qualities that makes the show’s final puzzles particularly effective.

Once the answer is revealed, the logic can appear surprisingly straightforward.

Finding it before the explanation — especially while a clock is rapidly counting toward zero — is a very different challenge.

One Last-Second Decision Changed Everything

Michael’s win became memorable not only because he solved a one percent question, but because of how narrowly he did it.

He had already committed to another answer.

The timer was nearly finished.

There was no opportunity to sit with the problem for several minutes or work backward calmly through every possibility.

He had to decide whether his first solution was wrong and then trust a new pattern quickly enough to replace it.

That choice came with the entire $100,000 prize hanging in the balance.

Had he stayed with 686, he would have missed the jackpot.

Instead, he changed it to 6848.

Seconds later, the clock stopped.

And when the correct answer appeared, Michael learned that the final adjustment had been exactly right.

For viewers who struggled with the puzzle long after the countdown ended, the win was another reminder of what makes The 1% Club deceptively difficult.

The answer can look obvious once someone explains it.

Finding that answer in 30 seconds, under pressure, with $100,000 at stake is another matter entirely.
