Marcus Rashford Returns for Manchester United — But Hull Defeat Overshadows His Long-Awaited Comeback
Marcus Rashford finally returned to competitive action for Manchester United after an absence of more than 18 months, but his comeback was overshadowed by a miserable 2-0 defeat away to newly promoted Hull City.

The England forward began the Premier League opener on the bench before being introduced at half-time, as Michael Carrick looked for a way back into a game United were already trailing. Rashford could not change the outcome, but his return offered a significant storyline on an otherwise disappointing afternoon for the visitors.
Hull secured all three points through first-half goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy, leaving United to begin their campaign with a result they would have wanted to avoid.
Rashford Marks His United Return After 618 Days
Rashford’s appearance was particularly notable given the uncertainty surrounding his future at Old Trafford.
The 28-year-old had spent the previous period on loan at Barcelona, and there had been widespread expectation that he could leave Manchester United permanently. Barcelona ultimately chose not to activate its option to sign him, while no other club came forward with the fee United were seeking.
With Rashford still under contract until 2028, he has instead remained at the club and was handed the No.9 shirt ahead of the new season.
His appearance against Hull marked his first competitive outing for United since December 2024, when he featured against Viktoria Plzen.
Rashford later reflected on the significance of the moment in an Instagram post.
“After 618 days, I’m back playing with United. I wish the result were better, but it’s something we can improve on.”
Despite the disappointing result, several of his United teammates showed their support for the message, with Lisandro Martinez, Bryan Mbeumo, Diogo Dalot and Andre Onana among those who liked the post.

Carrick Turns to Rashford at Half-Time
Rashford was brought on after 45 minutes, replacing Patrick Dorgu as Carrick attempted to alter the course of the match.
Dorgu, who initially arrived at United as a wing-back, was once again used in a more advanced position. However, it proved to be a difficult afternoon for the Denmark international, and Carrick opted to make the change at the interval.
The United manager was nevertheless keen to make clear that the substitution was not a criticism of Dorgu.
“Pat’s fine, we love him to bits. He’s a fantastic player, Pat. He’s a great character,” Carrick said after the match.
Carrick added that Dorgu remained an important part of his plans and described the decision as simply an attempt to find a different solution.
“He’s a big part of what we do, and he will be. So it was just one of those decisions. It’s nothing personal. Sometimes you’ve just got to make them, you know, trying to do something a little bit different.”
Rashford was unable to provide the spark United needed, however, as Hull protected their advantage and completed a memorable victory.
Carrick Open to Rashford Playing Through the Middle
Rashford’s role could become an interesting tactical question for United this season.
The England international has predominantly played from the left side during recent campaigns, but Carrick was asked before the Hull match whether the academy graduate could operate as a central striker.
The United boss believes he can.
“Of course he can play through in the middle. He has done,” Carrick said.

Carrick acknowledged that the central role is not necessarily Rashford’s natural first choice, but believes the forward has the ability to perform there when required.
“I wouldn’t say it’s naturally his number-one position, but he can do that,” Carrick explained.
He also pointed to the flexibility available across United’s forward line, with the club having used their attacking players in different roles.
“So, I think for us to have that option is really good moving through the season.”
For Rashford, the Hull defeat means his return to United football begins with disappointment. But after 618 days away from competitive action for the club, the forward now has another opportunity to establish himself in Carrick’s plans and contribute as the season progresses.
