Coleen Rooney celebrates Kai’s GCSE success as Manchester United prospect balances school and football

Coleen Rooney has proudly revealed that her 16-year-old son Kai has passed all of his GCSEs, marking another important milestone as the Manchester United academy prospect continues to pursue his football ambitions alongside his education.

The proud mum shared a photo of herself and Kai smiling together on results day, celebrating not only his exam success but also the place he has secured in sixth form.

“GCSE results day!! Super proud @kairooney.10… Great results, especially with a busy schedule, all passed and a place in 6th form!! We love you,” Coleen wrote on Instagram.

The achievement comes during an important period in Kai’s development at Manchester United, where he has been combining his studies with life inside the club’s academy.

Kai’s progress at Manchester United

Kai, the eldest son of United legend Wayne Rooney and Coleen, returned to Manchester United’s academy at the age of 11.

The teenager recently signed a first-year scholarship deal with the club, allowing him to continue his education while progressing through United’s youth system. If his development continues, he could become eligible for a professional contract once he turns 17.

His footballing progress was interrupted in March when he suffered a season-ending injury, ruling him out of the FA Youth Cup final against Manchester City.

Before the setback, however, Kai had enjoyed a breakthrough campaign. At just 15, he made his debut for Darren Fletcher’s Under-18 side and went on to score twice and provide an assist across six U18 Premier League appearances.

He also experienced the opportunity to play at Old Trafford for the first time last season, coming on for 21 minutes during United’s FA Youth Cup fourth-round victory over Derby County.

His latest academic success therefore represents another significant step forward as he attempts to manage the demands of academy football with his education.

Wayne Rooney took a different path

Kai’s achievement also highlights the different routes taken by father and son.

Wayne Rooney did not sit his GCSEs at Kai’s age. However, the former England star has previously explained that he made a conscious decision to continue educating himself later in his playing career.

Speaking about his own experience, Rooney said:

“It’s no secret that I didn’t even take GCSEs but I think people assume because of that that I’m not educated, which is really wrong.”

He explained that while playing for Everton and Manchester United, he deliberately educated himself in a number of areas, including black history and religion.

Rooney said this was partly motivated by his desire to better understand and communicate with teammates from different backgrounds.

“The reason I did that was because I wanted to hold conversations with my team-mates who are from different backgrounds.”

For Kai, the route has been rather different. His football career is developing within Manchester United’s academy while he remains committed to his education, with his latest GCSE results allowing him to continue into sixth form.

Kai makes his return from injury

The teenager has also recently returned to competitive action after recovering from the injury that disrupted his season.

Kai was included in Manchester United’s squad for the Otten Cup in Eindhoven, confirming his comeback in an Instagram post.

“First game back from injury. PSV (A),” he wrote.

United began the tournament against hosts PSV and suffered a 1-0 defeat. Kai was part of the 23-man squad alongside Jacey Carrick, the son of United boss Michael Carrick.

His return comes at an important stage of his development, with the midfielder now looking to establish himself more consistently with the Under-18s during the new season.

The proud father has also watched Kai at Old Trafford

Wayne Rooney has followed his son’s progress closely, although Kai previously asked his father not to attend some of his matches because of the attention that inevitably surrounds the Manchester United legend.

Wayne was nevertheless in the stands when Kai made his Old Trafford debut last season.

The former United striker later admitted that he had turned up to watch his son wearing what he believed was an oversized tracksuit — only to discover afterwards that he had actually gone to the game in a pair of pyjamas.

Recalling the incident on The Wayne Rooney Show, he explained that he had chosen what he thought was a comfortable tracksuit from his wardrobe before putting on a large coat and heading to the stadium.

It was only after returning home that Coleen asked him to check the label.

“It was actually a pair of pyjamas.”

Despite that amusing fashion mishap, the occasion was another memorable moment for the Rooney family as Kai continued to take his first steps at Old Trafford.

Now, with his GCSEs successfully completed and a place in sixth form secured, Kai can turn his attention back toward his football development while continuing the academic path that runs alongside it.

His latest achievement gives him another reason to celebrate as he prepares for the next stage of his Manchester United journey.
