Prince Harry announces UK and US engagements as Sussexes push back against King Charles’ ‘private citizens’ description

Prince Harry is preparing for a busy return to public engagements in Britain, with appearances in London followed by a high-profile trip to New York, as tensions with Buckingham Palace continue over how he and Meghan should be regarded.

The Duke of Sussex has announced a series of charity commitments in the UK and the United States this month. His schedule includes the inaugural Invictus Spirit Awards, the launch of a new Invictus education programme and the annual WellChild Awards before he travels to New York for the Clinton Global Initiative during United Nations General Assembly week.

The announcement comes just days after King Charles issued formal guidance reaffirming that Harry and Meghan are not working members of the Royal Family and should be treated as private citizens.

Sources close to the Sussexes have pushed back on that description, arguing that their worldwide profile makes the idea of a normal private life unrealistic.

Harry’s first UK engagements since returning

Harry’s first announced public commitments since returning to Britain will take place later this month.

On September 17, he will attend the inaugural Invictus Spirit Awards and the launch of the Invictus education programme, INSPIRE.

The Spirit Awards are designed to recognise individuals, organisations and communities whose work reflects the resilience, service and determination at the heart of the international Invictus Movement. The inaugural gala is scheduled to take place in London this September.

At the launch of INSPIRE, Harry is expected to take part in an assembly and play pickleball with school pupils.

The education programme was created by teachers for learners from early years through Key Stage 5. It draws on the Invictus Games and the experiences of competitors to produce curriculum-linked resources covering maths, English, STEM, art, performing arts, sport and PSHE education.

Harry will then attend the WellChild Awards in London on September 21.

He has been patron of WellChild, the national charity supporting seriously ill children and their families, since 2007. The annual ceremony has become a regular fixture in his calendar, with Harry having attended 15 times.

At this year’s event, he will meet the winners and their families, carers and health professionals and hear about their experiences of caring for children with serious and complex health needs.

A major New York appearance follows

Harry will then travel back to the United States for the Clinton Global Initiative in New York on September 22 and 23.

The annual gathering, held during United Nations General Assembly week, will bring him together with figures including former president Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Chrissy Teigen and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman. Harry is scheduled to appear at the event for the second time, following his participation in 2024.

The combination of engagements in Britain and the United States gives Harry a substantial public schedule only weeks after he and Meghan returned to the UK with their children.

His programme has consequently been viewed as a sign that he is beginning to establish a new public role in Britain, albeit outside the formal structure of the Royal Family.

That distinction is at the heart of the latest dispute between the Sussexes and Buckingham Palace.

Sussexes challenge ‘private citizens’ description

King Charles’ letter, issued through the Lord Chamberlain, reaffirmed that there had been no change to the arrangements agreed after Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in 2020.

The couple are not returning as working royals and cannot use their HRH styles. Their charitable and commercial activities are undertaken in a private capacity.

Harry and Meghan’s spokesman said they were surprised by the announcement and had been given only limited notice before the letter was circulated.

Sources close to the couple have since argued that describing them as private citizens does not accurately reflect their public profile.

Speaking to People, an insider said the couple remain so well known that living an ordinary private life is unrealistic.

The Sussexes’ position is that they should instead be understood as public figures.

The disagreement has significance beyond the wording itself. Harry has been engaged in a long-running dispute over publicly funded security in Britain, and the couple have raised concerns about the safety of their children, Archie and Lilibet.

The latest exchange therefore comes against a broader backdrop of disagreement over the Sussexes’ status, security and relationship with the Royal Family.

Uganda’s withdrawal from Invictus adds to the tension

The dispute has also become entangled with the Invictus Games.

Uganda recently withdrew from the 2027 Games in Birmingham, only around two months after becoming the 26th nation to join the Invictus community.

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Chief of Defense Forces, said the country would not participate in anything that lacked King Charles’ approval. He said the decision was intended to ensure Uganda was not seen as opposing the monarch.

The withdrawal came shortly after the King’s letter was made public.

Sources close to Harry told People that Uganda’s decision was a direct consequence of what they described as the guidance issued through the Lord Chamberlain.

They argued that the athletes who had expected to compete were the ones who ultimately suffered from the dispute.

General Kainerugaba, meanwhile, said he had been motivated to put an end to what he described as support for the “Harry-Meghan nonsense” within Uganda’s Ministry of Defence, while stressing his support for the monarch.

The timing has intensified scrutiny of Harry’s relationship with the Invictus Games, an initiative that has remained one of his most significant charitable projects since he founded it.

Just two months earlier, Uganda’s Defence Minister Kiryowa Kiwanuka had appeared alongside Harry at an Invictus Games gathering in London as Uganda’s participation was announced.

Warning that the royal dispute could hurt Invictus

PR adviser Mark Borkowski has warned that the continuing conflict between the Sussexes and Buckingham Palace could damage the Invictus brand.

He argued that the decision by Uganda should be treated as a warning for Harry and Meghan.

Borkowski said the Sussexes’ repeated briefings against the King and their presentation of themselves as victims risk failing to connect with the British public.

In his assessment, the controversy surrounding the couple is beginning to overshadow the organisation Harry created for wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans.

He also argued that Harry and Meghan were seeking the freedoms associated with being private citizens while retaining some of the influence and status associated with royalty.

The criticism comes as the Sussexes continue to insist that their public profile makes the private-citizen description difficult to reconcile with reality.

Family remains the Sussexes’ stated priority

Despite the increasingly public disagreement with Buckingham Palace, sources close to Harry and Meghan have stressed that their immediate priority is their children.

Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, are beginning a new school year after the family’s move from the United States to Britain.

Sources told People that getting the children settled has been the couple’s main focus and that they are happy to be back in the UK.

The family moved back to Britain last month after spending years in the United States. They are understood to have moved into a non-royal home in the UK while retaining their residence in Montecito, California.

The relocation has involved considerable practical changes for the family, with the children starting school and the couple adjusting to life in Britain again.

The sources said the family had been busy managing the move and settling the children, while other matters would be dealt with in time.

Poll shows little appetite for a royal comeback

The latest public opinion figures also suggest that Harry and Meghan face limited support for a return to official royal duties.

A YouGov survey of 4,506 adults in Great Britain, conducted on September 9, found that 51 per cent would rather Harry and Meghan did not return as working members of the Royal Family at some point.

Only 16 per cent said they would prefer the couple to return to working royal duties, while 33 per cent said they did not know.

The survey was conducted one day after the Sussexes responded to Buckingham Palace’s clarification of their status.

The figures underline the gap between the couple’s continuing international visibility and public support for their restoration to official royal duties.

For now, Harry’s schedule points toward a different kind of public role: highly visible charity work carried out independently of the monarchy.

His September programme will take him from Invictus events and the WellChild Awards in London to the Clinton Global Initiative in New York.

At the same time, his dispute with Buckingham Palace over what it means to be a private citizen, and the fallout from Uganda’s withdrawal from the Invictus Games, ensures that his return to public life in Britain will continue to be closely watched.
