John Lennon Was Reportedly Frustrated by Paul McCartney’s Gift for Writing Sweet Melodies

John Lennon and Paul McCartney shared one of the most celebrated songwriting partnerships in music history. But behind The Beatles’ extraordinary success was also a fierce creative rivalry — and, according to Lennon’s former assistant Dan Richter, there was one particular aspect of McCartney’s talent that Lennon found difficult to ignore.

Richter, an actor who once worked as Lennon’s assistant and lived with Lennon and Yoko Ono, recalled that Lennon could become irritated when comparing his own songwriting with McCartney’s. The source of that frustration was not simply McCartney’s success, but his ability to create the kind of sweet, instantly appealing melodies that Lennon felt he could not write as naturally.

The songwriting credits of Lennon-McCartney appear on many of The Beatles’ biggest songs, although the pair often wrote their compositions separately, with one member contributing only limited input to the other’s work.

Lennon was responsible for songs including In My Life, Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, Help! and Strawberry Fields Forever. McCartney, meanwhile, wrote or primarily developed songs such as Yesterday, Hey Jude, Let It Be, Blackbird and Eleanor Rigby.

According to Richter, Lennon once had someone compile a list of The Beatles’ songs and identify which tracks belonged primarily to him and which were McCartney’s. Looking over the list reportedly made Lennon uncomfortable.

Richter recalled that Lennon was particularly bothered by McCartney’s ability to produce gentle, melodic songs such as Yesterday and Hey Jude. In Richter’s account, Lennon felt that this was a quality he simply did not possess in the same way.

The recollection offers another glimpse into the competitive relationship between the two musicians. Their rivalry helped drive The Beatles creatively, but it could also expose differences in their individual strengths as songwriters.

McCartney’s early solo success added to the pressure

The tension did not disappear when The Beatles broke up.

Following the band’s split, Lennon initially struggled to match the kind of mainstream success McCartney achieved during the early stages of his solo career. Richter suggested that Lennon was conscious of the difference.

Lennon released his second solo album, Imagine, in 1971. According to Richter, the album was partly intended to demonstrate that Lennon could create a major mainstream record containing a significant hit.

At the time, Lennon’s earlier Plastic Ono Band albums were receiving a positive response in Britain but were not performing as strongly in the United States. Richter recalled that Lennon wanted Imagine to change that perception and establish himself once again as a major commercial force.

The story highlights how deeply the competitive spirit between Lennon and McCartney continued to influence Lennon even after The Beatles were gone.

Their differences were ultimately part of what made the partnership so distinctive. Lennon often leaned toward sharper, more introspective or unconventional songwriting, while McCartney demonstrated a particular strength for melody and accessible pop songs.

That contrast produced some of The Beatles’ most enduring music — while also creating a rivalry that, according to Richter’s recollections, could still weigh heavily on Lennon.
