Richard Keys’ Attack On Match Of The Day Sparks Furious Response From BBC Commentator

Richard Keys has reignited a familiar football broadcasting feud after launching a scathing attack on the BBC’s iconic Match of the Day — only to draw an equally blunt response from one of the programme’s own commentators.

Keys, who has recently teamed up with former Sky Sports colleague Andy Gray for their new podcast Keys & Gray Unleashed, questioned whether Match of the Day still has a place in the modern football landscape.

According to Keys, the programme has become outdated in an era when fans can access Premier League highlights almost immediately through social media.

Richard Keys Says Match Of The Day Is “Past Its Sell-By Date”

Discussing Gary Lineker’s departure from the BBC programme, Keys dismissed the attention surrounding the search for a new presenter.

“When Gary Lineker left Match of the Day, there was a big fuss about who was going to present the programme going forward and my attitude then and remains ‘who cares’?” he said.

Keys went even further, arguing that the show had already lost its relevance — even during Lineker’s time as host.

“Match of the Day is a programme well past its sell by date. It was when Gary was presenting it. Who watches it?”

His main criticism centred on how quickly football footage is now available online.

Mark Chapman, Gabby Logan and Kelly Cates

“By the time it goes to air everybody knows what’s happened in the day,” Keys said. “Highlights are available from 5.15 on most social media outlets.”

He also questioned the need for the programme to include team news before the highlights, particularly when broadcasters now have access to rapid online coverage.

“They even let commentators, in an eight-minute edit, do team news at the top. Why? What’s the point of that?”

Keys Also Questions Alan Shearer’s BBC Salary

Keys did not stop with the format of the programme.

He also turned his attention to Alan Shearer, who earned between £390,000 and £394,999 for his BBC punditry work last year.

Keys concluded his criticism by accusing the BBC of continuing to believe it offers the best football coverage.

“The BBC still think they cover football better than anyone else,” he said, before looking directly into the camera and adding: “Not since 1992 guys.”

The remarks quickly drew criticism from Dan O’Hagan, a commentator who has worked on Match of the Day and other BBC sports highlights programmes.

“Unemployable Dinosaurs”

O’Hagan did not hold back when responding to Keys and Gray on X.

“So, this is to be their format then,” he wrote.

“A pair of old, unemployable dinosaurs saying mildly controversial things for clicks. No better than the YouTubers or the s***-takes-for-likes influencers.”

He added that he found the situation “quite sad”, while making a distinction between the two former Sky Sports colleagues.

“Especially as Gray was genuinely the best co-commentator around.”

The exchange adds another layer to the long-running debate surrounding the future of Match of the Day and how traditional football broadcasting can compete with the speed of social media.

A New Era For Match Of The Day

Lineker had presented Match of the Day from 1999 until 2025, before stepping down last summer.

The BBC subsequently moved to a shared presenting format, with Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan taking on hosting duties during the following season.

At the same time, reports have suggested there have been tensions behind the scenes as BBC director of sport Alex Kay-Jelski looks to take the long-running programme in a different direction.

There has also been speculation surrounding Shearer’s future on the show, with reports claiming that he planned to reduce his appearances to once a month.

The BBC rejected the suggestion that Shearer’s decision was connected to Kay-Jelski.

“The suggestion that Alan is reducing his Match of the Day appearances because of the director of sport is untrue,” a spokesperson said.

Shearer himself said the decision had been under discussion for some time and was simply about reclaiming more weekends.

“Cutting back my MOTD appearances is something we’ve been discussing for some time and purely so I can have some weekends back,” he said.

“I’ve always had a positive relationship with everyone at the BBC and that continues to be the case.”

With Match of the Day entering a new chapter, Keys’ criticism has now put the spotlight firmly back on the programme — and O’Hagan’s fierce response shows that the debate over its future is unlikely to quieten anytime soon.
