England Have Just Made Their Call… The 2030 World Cup Boycott Threat Has Collapsed After Gianni Infantino’s Shock U-Turn. England And The Other Uefa Nations Are Now Set To Take Part In The 2030 World Cup After Fifa Gave Assurances That Its Controversial Plan To Sell Stakes In The Tournament Will Not Return. But The Real Shock Is What This Dramatic U-Turn Means For Infantino – And The Growing Rebellion Against His Leadership

UEFA Set To Drop FIFA World Cup Boycott Threat After Receiving Key Assurances

UEFA appears ready to step back from its threat to boycott FIFA competitions after receiving assurances that a controversial proposal that sparked widespread opposition will not be repeated.

Following the decision to scrap the plan, UEFA made clear that simply abandoning it would not be enough to resolve the dispute. European football’s governing body said one of the conditions for European nations to continue participating in FIFA competitions would be “assurances such attempts to disfigure the game in this way will never be made again.”

According to reports, those assurances have now been received.

European Nations Expected To Abandon Boycott Threat

The issue is expected to be discussed at meetings in Monaco later this week, with all 55 UEFA member associations, including England, reportedly expected to withdraw their boycott threat in due course.

However, that does not necessarily mean the dispute with FIFA president Gianni Infantino is over.

The European nations are reportedly considering other forms of protest over Infantino’s leadership of FIFA. Those potential measures could also be discussed during the Monaco meetings.

The possibility of a boycott had emerged amid growing dissatisfaction with FIFA following Infantino’s proposal to sell stakes in the World Cup.

Infantino Has Lost Support Over World Cup Proposal

Infantino’s plan has faced opposition from a number of football associations around the world, with criticism extending beyond FIFA’s external members and into the organisation itself.

One of the most significant blows came from Carlos Cordeiro, described as Infantino’s right-hand man.

Before the proposal was withdrawn, Cordeiro openly condemned the deal, calling it “a bad deal for football” before resigning in protest.

The developments have left Infantino facing mounting pressure as European football considers how best to respond.

For now, the immediate threat of a UEFA-wide boycott appears to be fading after the assurances sought by the European governing body were provided. But with alternative forms of protest still reportedly under consideration, the confrontation between UEFA and FIFA is far from settled.
