The ‘easy’ The 1% Club country question that has nothing to do with geography – but can you spot the trick?

Switzerland and Argentina are apparently “small”, while Belgium and India are “big” – and trying to work out why could send you completely down the wrong path

If someone told you Switzerland was small and India was big, you probably wouldn’t think there was much of a puzzle to solve.

Then they tell you Argentina is also small.

And Germany is big.

Suddenly, whatever rule you thought you had figured out starts looking considerably less convincing.

That was the wonderfully misleading premise behind a question on The 1% Club – and it’s exactly the sort of puzzle that can make you waste precious seconds thinking about facts that don’t matter at all.

Because despite being built entirely around countries, you don’t actually need to know anything about geography to solve it.

No populations.

No land areas.

No capitals.

No flags.

Everything you need is already written on the screen.

See if you can solve the 20% question

The puzzle appeared during Series 2 of the ITV quiz hosted by Lee Mack.

It was a 20% question, meaning it had been answered correctly by 20 percent of the people surveyed for the show.

Contestants were told:

“Switzerland, Morocco, Argentina, Latvia and Lithuania are small.

Belgium, India and Germany are big.

What are Thailand, Iran, Nigeria and Yemen?”

Take a moment before going any further.

Are they small?

Are they big?

Or is there another possible answer?

And remember how The 1% Club works.

Unlike a traditional quiz, knowing more facts about Thailand, Iran, Nigeria or Yemen isn’t necessarily going to help you.

In fact, it might make the question harder.

Geography is a complete distraction

The wording practically begs you to start comparing the countries.

Switzerland is relatively small geographically, so perhaps that’s the rule.

But then Argentina appears in the same group.

Maybe it’s population?

That quickly causes problems too.

Perhaps it’s something involving flags, continents, currencies or the number of letters in their names.

All perfectly reasonable theories.

All unnecessary.

Because the words “small” and “big” aren’t really descriptions of the countries at all.

They’re instructions for understanding the pattern.

Still haven’t got it?

Ignore the countries themselves and look only at their first letters.

The answer is TINY

Take the first group:

Switzerland
Morocco
Argentina
Latvia
Lithuania

Put those first letters together:

S M A L L

They literally spell SMALL.

Now try the second group:

Belgium
India
Germany

That gives you:

B I G

Or BIG.

Which means the final four countries follow exactly the same rule:

Thailand
Iran
Nigeria
Yemen

T I N Y.

So the answer is:

TINY.

And that’s the particularly satisfying part of the puzzle.

The question doesn’t ask whether Thailand, Iran, Nigeria and Yemen are big or small.

It asks “What are” they.

The answer has been sitting vertically down the beginning of their names the entire time.

It’s the kind of question The 1% Club does brilliantly

There is effectively zero geographical knowledge required.

Someone who knows the exact population and land area of every country on the screen has no advantage over someone who knows nothing about them.

Arguably, all that knowledge could actually become a disadvantage because it gives your brain more irrelevant possibilities to investigate.

Instead, the solution comes from recognising that the examples are demonstrating their own labels:

SMALL → Switzerland, Morocco, Argentina, Latvia, Lithuania

BIG → Belgium, India, Germany

Once you’ve noticed that, TINY becomes almost impossible not to see.

But noticing it while a 30-second clock is running is another matter.

And that’s what makes this such a classic The 1% Club trap: the puzzle looks like it’s testing one thing right up until the moment you realise it was testing something completely different.
