Jamie Carragher Faces HMRC Bankruptcy Petition as Former Liverpool Star Moves to Resolve Tax Dispute

Jamie Carragher has been named in a bankruptcy petition filed by HM Revenue and Customs at the High Court, placing the former Liverpool defender in a legal battle with the taxman.

The 48-year-old football legend, who has since built a successful career as a television pundit with Sky Sports, was identified in the court record under his full name, James Lee Duncan Carragher. The document listed him as a “litigant in Person”.

The petition was filed at the High Court on Wednesday, August 27, as Carragher faces a dispute over his tax affairs.

However, a spokesperson for the former Liverpool star has stressed that the matter is already being addressed and is expected to be resolved imminently.

“This is a private tax matter that should have been resolved sooner, and the appropriate steps are being taken today to settle it. It is understood that the matter will not proceed any further and will be resolved imminently,” the spokesperson said.

HMRC, meanwhile, declined to comment specifically on Carragher because of taxpayer confidentiality laws.

A spokesperson for the tax authority said: “We take a supportive approach to dealing with customers who have tax debts and do everything we can to help those who engage with us to get out of debt, such as offering instalment plans. We only petition for bankruptcy as a last resort.”

Carragher’s financial position

The development comes despite reports that Carragher has accumulated a net worth of more than £16 million.

It has also been claimed that the former defender earned as much as £5 million a year during the peak of his playing career at Liverpool. Since retiring, he has continued to earn substantial sums through his work in football broadcasting, reportedly receiving up to £1 million annually from his punditry roles with Sky Sports and CBS in the United States.

Carragher also remains a familiar face on Stick To Football, appearing alongside fellow former Manchester United star Gary Neville.

From Liverpool legend to broadcasting career

Carragher spent almost his entire professional playing career at Liverpool, representing the club from 1996 until 2013.

During those 17 years, the defender made 737 appearances for the Reds and established himself as one of the club’s longest-serving players.

His trophy collection included three League Cups, two FA Cups, a UEFA Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and, most famously, the 2005 Champions League.

Carragher also represented England 38 times. His international career included appearances at Euro 2004 and the 2006 and 2010 World Cups.

After hanging up his boots, he successfully transitioned into television, becoming one of the most recognisable football pundits in the UK.

Carragher has previously spoken about his lowest moment

The tax dispute comes years after Carragher faced another highly publicised controversy.

In 2018, he was filmed spitting towards a 14-year-old girl and her father as he drove his Range Rover following Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United. Carragher subsequently apologised for his behaviour.

Reflecting on the incident during a podcast appearance with Alistair Campbell, the former footballer admitted that it continued to affect him long afterwards.

“We were devastated by it really,” Carragher said, recalling the aftermath and the impact it had on his family.

He explained that he had “just snapped” and could not explain why he reacted in that way.

Carragher said the incident would probably “haunt” him for the rest of his life and that it took him between six and 12 months to move on from it. He also recalled telling his wife what had happened as soon as he returned home, describing the support she gave him as “unbelievable”.

For now, Carragher’s attention is firmly on resolving his latest issue.

His representative has indicated that the private tax matter is expected to be settled imminently and will not proceed any further.
