Rest In Peace, The Legend! Portsmouth’s Darkest Farewell As Alan Knight Dies At 65. Football has lost a true one-club giant. Alan Knight, the beloved Portsmouth icon who stood between the posts for an extraordinary 801 matches, has died aged 65, leaving Fratton Park and generations of Pompey supporters heartbroken. His passing closes the chapter on a remarkable life devoted almost entirely to one club. Known simply as “The Legend,” Knight became far more than a goalkeeper — he was a symbol of loyalty, courage and Portsmouth itself. Now, as emotional tributes flood in, one devastating farewell from the club says everything: “He will be sadly missed.”

Portsmouth Mourn Club Legend Alan Knight at 65 as ‘The Legend’ Dies After Cancer Battle

Portsmouth are mourning one of the most iconic figures in their history after confirming the death of Alan Knight at the age of 65.

The legendary goalkeeper died this morning surrounded by his close family following a battle with prostate cancer.

Knight made his diagnosis public in October 2024 and used his experience to encourage others to seek medical advice and get tested if they noticed symptoms. His contribution to raising awareness continued beyond the pitch, with the club helping raise £40,000 for prostate cancer charities last May.

An Alan Knight XI drew 8-8 with a Pompey Legends side at Fratton Park during the fundraising match.

‘The Legend’ who became part of Portsmouth history

Knight’s connection with Portsmouth began when he joined the club as a 14-year-old apprentice.

Born in Balham, south-east London, he made his senior debut two years later on the final day of the 1977/78 season. He kept a clean sheet against Rotherham United, although Pompey finished bottom of the Third Division that campaign.

What followed was an extraordinary career almost entirely defined by one club.

Knight made 801 appearances for Portsmouth, more than any other goalkeeper has made for a single club in football history.

He represented Pompey across all four professional divisions over four different decades and played a major role during some of the most memorable periods in the club’s history.

Three promotions and an FA Cup semi-final

Knight was part of Portsmouth sides that secured promotion on three occasions, including the club’s rise to the top flight in the 1986/87 season.

He also helped Pompey reach the FA Cup semi-finals in 1992.

Portsmouth faced eventual winners Liverpool at that stage, with Knight and his teammates forcing a replay before eventually being eliminated on penalties.

His remarkable playing career finally came to an end in January 2000, when Knight made his final appearance for the club at the age of 38.

But his relationship with Portsmouth was far from over.

A legacy that continued after his playing days

After hanging up his gloves, Knight returned to Portsmouth in a coaching capacity, further strengthening a bond that had already made him one of the most beloved figures in the club’s history.

More than two decades after his final appearance, supporters still affectionately called him “The Legend” — a title Portsmouth believe was fully deserved.

In a heartfelt statement, the club said:

“The word legend is often overused in football, but the fact that Alan was still known as ‘The Legend’ at Pompey more than 20 years after hanging up his gloves speaks volumes.”

The club added that he would be “sadly missed” by the Fratton faithful, his former teammates and everyone at Portsmouth who knew and loved him.

Portsmouth open book of condolence

The club’s thoughts are with Knight’s wife Heather, his daughters Jade and Rebekah, and the rest of his family and friends during what Portsmouth described as an “incredibly sad time”.

A book of condolence is also being set up at Fratton Park, giving supporters an opportunity to pay their respects to a player whose name became inseparable from the club.

From a teenage apprentice to a record-breaking goalkeeper, promotion winner, FA Cup semi-finalist and later coach, Knight devoted much of his life to Portsmouth.

His 801 appearances tell only part of the story. For generations of Pompey supporters, Alan Knight was more than a goalkeeper — he was simply The Legend.
