The 1% Club leaves 32 contestants stumped with tricky family question
The 1% Club sent 32 contestants packing with one deceptively simple question about marriage and family relationships.
The tricky puzzle appeared on the ITV quiz show hosted by comedian Lee Mack, leaving a sizeable group of contestants unable to work out which of three scenarios was impossible.
The question came as the players battled through the competition for the chance to win up to £100,000. The format begins with 100 contestants, with the questions becoming progressively more difficult as the game goes on. Rather than relying on general knowledge, the show tests logic and common sense.
On this occasion, the stumbling block arrived at the 40% question, with 32 contestants failing to make it through.
Could you work out the impossible marriage?
Lee turned to the remaining players and presented them with a question based on family relationships.
He asked which of the following would be impossible:
- Marrying your cousin’s cousin
- Marrying your brother’s widow
- Marrying your widow’s sister
The contestants were given 30 seconds to decide which answer had to be false.
For many of them, the wording proved far more confusing than it initially appeared.

When the time ran out, Lee appeared surprised by the number of players who had failed to find the answer.
“Wow! That is massive!” he said, before revealing that 32 people had been eliminated by the question.
He then prepared to reveal the answer as the studio audience reacted.
The answer was the widow’s sister
The correct choice was “marry your widow’s sister.”
The reasoning is hidden in the meaning of the word widow. If someone has a widow, that person must already be dead. As a result, it would be impossible for them to marry their widow’s sister.
The other two options do not create the same problem.
Lee followed the reveal with one of his trademark jokes, saying: “And before we get any complaints, yes, I accept that is a bit Zombie-ist!”
The elimination of 32 contestants also had an immediate impact on the game. Their departures helped push the prize fund up to £90,000 as the remaining players moved on to the 35% question.
For those still in the competition, the challenge was becoming increasingly difficult. The show’s format is designed so that contestants face questions answered correctly by progressively smaller percentages of the public, with the ultimate goal of reaching the final question that only 1% of people are expected to solve.

The key was to focus on the wording rather than overthink the family relationships.
Your widow’s sister could only be your widow’s sister because you would already be dead. That makes the third option the only impossible scenario.
