Only Connect viewers divided over contestant’s ‘I was born in 2004’ explanation

A seemingly straightforward Only Connect clue left viewers debating the generation gap after student Lizzie Riley admitted she had never heard of the answer, before adding a comment about her age that made both host Victoria Coren Mitchell and some viewers wince.

The BBC quiz show, hosted by Victoria Coren Mitchell, returned on Tuesday night with another round of notoriously difficult questions, as teams Whitley Bays and Oh No, They Didn’t went head-to-head.

A tricky connection involving Van Gogh and Don McLean

In the second round, Whitley Bays, made up of Ruth Erdal, Jess Volpe and Steve Erdal, were presented with a particularly cryptic set of visual clues.

The first image was Vincent van Gogh’s famous painting The Starry Night. The next showed a blue-and-grey pattern, while the final image depicted people enjoying a summer’s day in a park.

With no obvious connection between the pictures, the team eventually offered “sugar cube” as their answer. It was incorrect.

The question then passed to the opposing team, Oh No, They Didn’t, consisting of students Lizzie Riley and George Dickenson and graduate Diya Shah.

They were unable to identify the link either.

Victoria subsequently revealed the answer: Vincent.

The connection was Don McLean’s song Vincent, which was inspired by the life and work of Vincent van Gogh.

Turning back to the Whitley Bays team, Victoria admitted she had expected them to make the connection.

“I thought you were going to get that!” she told them before explaining the answer.

The puzzle had therefore linked the images to the song Vincent, rather than asking contestants to identify the individual elements themselves.

Lizzie’s response catches viewers’ attention

After the answer was revealed, Victoria turned her attention to the Oh No, They Didn’t team and noticed Lizzie appeared to be looking blank.

When asked about the song, the student explained that she had never heard of it.

It was her follow-up comment, however, that quickly became the focus of the discussion among viewers.

Lizzie added: “I was born in 2004.”

Victoria visibly winced at the remark, and some viewers watching at home reacted just as strongly.

One viewer joked that discovering someone born in 2004 was competing on Only Connect was enough to make them switch off.

Another questioned why someone would enter a quiz show known for its broad range of general knowledge while relying on age as an explanation for not knowing an older cultural reference.

A further viewer took an even broader view, complaining that younger contestants sometimes use their age to explain why they do not recognise things from before they were born.

Not everyone thought the comment was a complaint

The reaction was not entirely one-sided, though.

Discussion among Only Connect viewers also included people who did not see Lizzie’s comment as a complaint or an attempt to excuse her performance. Some argued that simply explaining why she had never encountered an older television programme, song or cultural reference was understandable.

Others pointed out that age inevitably affects the cultural references contestants are familiar with. The show’s questions can draw on material from many different periods, meaning younger players may encounter references that predate them by decades.

The exchange nevertheless struck a nerve with some longtime viewers, particularly because Only Connect has a reputation for demanding an unusually broad range of knowledge.

The question itself was certainly designed to make contestants work for the answer.

With The Starry Night appearing as the first clue, viewers might initially have been expected to think about Van Gogh. The subsequent images offered considerably less obvious assistance, with the eventual answer requiring recognition of the connection to McLean’s Vincent.

The song, released by Don McLean, is closely associated with Van Gogh and his paintings, making the title the common link between the seemingly unrelated clues.

For contestants who did not know the song, however, the connection was far from obvious.

The moment has since prompted plenty of discussion among Only Connect fans about how much cultural knowledge can reasonably be expected from contestants of different ages.

And while some viewers were frustrated by Lizzie’s “I was born in 2004” explanation, others saw it simply as an honest acknowledgment of a generational gap.

Either way, the Vincent puzzle proved to be exactly the kind of connection Only Connect is known for: a collection of clues that initially appear unrelated, with the answer becoming much clearer once the missing link is finally revealed.
