Only Connect Has Always Been Hard — but Some Viewers Say This Went Too Far… One “Ridiculous” Round Left Fans Saying The BBC Quiz Was Becoming “UNWATCHABLE” — And The Clues That Caused The Backlash Show Exactly Why

Only Connect viewers call latest episode “unwatchable” as questions leave fans stumped

Only Connect viewers have been left frustrated by the latest batch of questions, with some fans saying the BBC quiz has become so difficult that it is becoming “unwatchable.”

The reaction followed the episode broadcast on Monday, 10 February 2025, when Four Opinions faced Cat Cows in the semi-final of series 20. The programme is already famous for demanding a mixture of knowledge, logic and lateral thinking, but several viewers felt this week’s questions pushed that difficulty even further.

For many people watching at home, the usual challenge of trying to solve the clues alongside the contestants proved particularly difficult.

A particularly tricky set of connections

Hosted by Victoria Coren Mitchell, Only Connect asks contestants to identify the connection between apparently unrelated clues. The earlier clues are deliberately designed to make the answer difficult to spot, with additional clues gradually making the connection clearer.

The semi-final between Four Opinions and Cat Cows was no exception.

One question featured clues including “musicians played” and “postal clerks raced to protect the mail.” Viewers who were unable to see the link were eventually given the answer by Coren Mitchell: the clues referred to things that happened on the Titanic.

Another question proved even more baffling for some viewers. The clues were:

  • Swelling: on bones
  • Finger: at the tip of the middle finger
  • Mouse: throughout the body
  • Pan: in the knees

The connection depended on putting “little” before the first word.

Coren Mitchell explained that the resulting terms referred to body parts and then broke down the linguistic connection, including the Latin origin of mus, meaning mouse. The explanation linked the word to muscles and their presence throughout the body.

While the answer may have made sense once revealed, several viewers said they had little chance of reaching it during the timed round.

Viewers say the difficulty has gone too far

The response on social media was mixed, but a number of Only Connect fans expressed frustration at the questions.

One viewer complained that the questions were becoming “ridiculous”, acknowledging that the programme’s appeal comes partly from being one of television’s hardest quizzes, but saying the difficulty was making it less enjoyable to watch.

Another viewer described the show as becoming “unwatchable”, asking for contestants and viewers to be given more of a chance.

Others admitted they had barely been able to work out any of the answers, while another described the week’s connecting wall as a “killer.”

One particularly frustrated fan joked about spending the following week trying to devise a question even more obscure than anything the programme’s setters had produced.

Another viewer felt the situation had gone too far, arguing that the questions had become so difficult that the only person really enjoying them was the person who had written them.

Not everyone was defeated

Despite the complaints, there were also viewers who found some of the questions manageable.

One fan joked about feeling particularly pleased with themselves after solving one of the answers. Another even suggested that the questions seemed easier than usual that evening.

Discussion among fans elsewhere was similarly mixed. Some viewers said they successfully identified the Titanic connection, while others found the body-parts question exceptionally difficult even after hearing the explanation.

That split reaction captures one of the peculiarities of Only Connect. A question that seems almost impossible to one viewer can suddenly appear obvious once the final connection is revealed.

The episode itself was the first semi-final of series 20, with a place in the third-place play-off at stake. The next semi-final, Tea Totallers v Crunchers, was scheduled for Monday, 17 February 2025 on BBC Two.

For fans who enjoy tackling the questions from home, the debate is likely to continue: is the extreme difficulty what makes Only Connect distinctive, or can the questions become so obscure that even the fun of trying to solve them disappears?
