Only Connect viewers question Victoria Coren Mitchell’s leniency after disputed answers

Viewers of BBC Two’s Only Connect have questioned Victoria Coren Mitchell’s decisions after the presenter appeared to accept a series of answers that some fans felt did not fully match the clues.

The debate followed the latest episode, which aired on Monday, September 9, 2024, and featured Too Many Cookes taking on Pipe-Dreamers in a first-round match. The episode was the fifth instalment of series 20.

Only Connect is known for its deliberately difficult questions, with contestants required to spot connections between seemingly unrelated clues. That made Coren Mitchell’s willingness to accept some of the answers particularly noticeable to viewers.

Fans question two decisions

The first disagreement came only minutes into the programme.

Too Many Cookes were working through a question involving expressions containing animals. Their initial response was given as “Things for expressions with animals in them.”

After being prompted to provide something more specific, the team offered “Two word phrases with animal being the first word.”

They were then asked to explain what the clues represented.

The team suggested “Frogmarch and bull or bear market.”

Coren Mitchell accepted the response and awarded them a point, explaining that she understood how they had reached their answer. She also noted that a bull market can be described as a bull run.

The decision quickly caught the attention of viewers watching at home.

One viewer wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Can’t believe she’s given too many Cooke’s that one. Bad enough she gave them the one before when they didn’t know (or at least articulate) the answer.”

Others similarly questioned whether the answers were sufficiently precise.

Comments included: “VCM being very easy with accepting that answer”, while another viewer wrote that she was “so lenient this series, accepting wrong answers as being correct.”

Another complained that the answers were becoming “so vague sometimes.”

Coren Mitchell promises to be lenient with the other team

The issue became even more noticeable when Too Many Cookes were given another opportunity to answer with a vague response later in the programme.

Coren Mitchell pulled a face before saying: “I’ll take it, I’ll take it.”

She then turned to Pipe-Dreamers and acknowledged what had happened.

“I’m going to look for an opportunity to be lenient with you later,” she told them.

The comment appeared to be an attempt to ensure that Pipe-Dreamers would receive similar treatment if they gave an answer that was close but not quite exact.

That explanation, however, did little to settle the debate among viewers.

One fan said they could not believe Coren Mitchell had accepted the film-related answer, adding that the contestants had “absolutely no idea.”

Another wrote: “She’s so lenient this series, accepting wrong answers as being correct.”

The disputed film question

One of the more controversial decisions came during a question about films with missing ratings.

The challenge involved movie titles from which letters representing an age classification had been removed.

Too Many Cookes offered “niversity challenge”, with the letter U missing.

Vanessa responded that she would ideally have liked to hear a film title such as Up, but suggested that the contestants were referring to the film made from University Challenge.

She added that nobody had heard of it because it was a lesser quiz show.

Coren Mitchell ultimately accepted the answer, contributing to the criticism from viewers who felt the response was too imprecise.

The dispute was not limited to the accepted answers. Another part of the episode also generated discussion when contestants struggled with a picture round.

The clues involved images including a sun, a shoe and a queue, followed by a tree, bee and knee. Too Many Cookes attempted to identify the connection, but their initial answer was incorrect.

Coren Mitchell explained that the pattern involved the number of rhyming words increasing with each clue: one word that rhymed with one, two words that rhymed with two, and three words that rhymed with three.

She then revealed a fourth set featuring door, Demi Moore, Thor and a boar.

The explanation prompted another wave of comments from viewers, including debate over whether sun rhymes with one, and whether Thor rhymes with four. One viewer described the latter as being dependent on dialect.

Too Many Cookes eventually win

Despite the controversy surrounding several answers, Too Many Cookes went on to finish the match ahead of Pipe-Dreamers.

The final score was 27 points to 20, with Too Many Cookes progressing from the first-round contest. The episode was officially listed as Too Many Cookes v Pipe-Dreamers, with Victoria Coren Mitchell presenting the match on BBC Two.

The reaction from viewers nevertheless showed how closely the show’s audience scrutinises the rules. On a programme built around finding precise connections between difficult clues, even a small amount of flexibility from the host can become a talking point.

For fans who felt the answers had not been sufficiently specific, Coren Mitchell’s promise to give Pipe-Dreamers a similar opportunity was therefore an important part of the episode, even if it did not prevent the debate from continuing.
