Only Connect contestant puts head in hands as viewers shout answer at their TVs

Only Connect viewers were united in frustration during Monday night’s episode after contestants appeared to overlook an answer that many people watching at home thought was staring them in the face.

The moment came during the Connecting Wall round, when Ad Astra were trying to complete a group of anagrams linked to different starches and carbohydrates. The team had already identified three answers, but one final word continued to elude them.

For viewers at home, however, the solution seemed much easier.

Viewers quickly spotted the missing word

Hosted by Victoria Coren Mitchell, Monday’s episode saw Culture Club take on Ad Astra in the latest match of the BBC Two quiz’s 22nd series. The episode, which aired on September 7, was Series 22, Episode 9.

Ad Astra’s team consisted of retired RAF officer David Howes, astrophysics lecturer Paul McMillan, and their captain, research development officer Louise McMillan.

Their difficulty came during the Connecting Wall, where they were working through a set of anagrams representing different types of starches and carbohydrates.

They had already managed to crack three of the clues:

• top oat → potato
• tapas → pasta
• eric → rice

But there was still one answer missing.

As the clock continued to run down, the team struggled to see what connected the remaining word to the other three. At one point, they could only ask in frustration: “What are we missing?”

That was enough to leave viewers watching from home shouting at their screens.

The missing answer was “beard”, which rearranges to “bread”.

Fans couldn’t believe the team missed it

As soon as the connection became clear, viewers took to Twitter, now known as X, to express their disbelief.

One viewer wrote: “I AM SCREAMING BREAD #onlyconnect”, while another said they had been “Shouting BEARD IS BREAD!! over and over at my TV.”

Others admitted they had been doing exactly the same thing.

One posted: “Shouting BREAD repeatedly at the TV. #onlyconnect”, while another joked that the programme was one of the few shows capable of making them shout “Bread” at their television.

The reaction was understandable given how simple the final connection appeared once the answer had been revealed. The first three anagrams had already established the pattern, leaving viewers convinced that bread should have been an obvious candidate.

Paul’s reaction summed up the moment

When the correct solutions were finally revealed, Paul immediately realised what the team had missed.

“Bread, it’s bread!” he exclaimed before putting his head in his hands.

Louise was equally incredulous, admitting: “Can’t believe we didn’t spot bread!”

It was a particularly painful moment for the team because the answer was so close to the word they had been given. For those watching, the frustration quickly became one of the episode’s most memorable moments.

Ad Astra still came out on top

Despite their stumble in the Connecting Wall, Ad Astra managed to recover and ultimately won the contest.

The team finished with 26 points, securing their place in the next round, while Culture Club ended the match on 20 points.

Culture Club featured Charlie Brookfield, a consultant microbiologist, Viki Owen, a clinical scientist, and captain Hugh Adler, a consultant microbiologist.

The result means Ad Astra continued their run in the competition after previously appearing in the series. Their earlier Series 22 appearance came on July 20, when they faced Two Hearts.

For all the difficulty posed by the Connecting Wall, the team ultimately did enough to secure the victory.
