It Looks So Easy… Until You Actually Try It. The 1% Club’s Deceptively Simple £1.10 Bat-And-Ball Question Left Viewers Completely Divided — And Two Contestants Were Knocked Out After Falling Into The Same Trap Almost Everyone Spots Too Late

The simple maths question that keeps catching people out

There are few things more humbling than confidently shouting an answer at the television, only to discover you were completely wrong. That is exactly what happened when viewers of ITV’s The 1% Club were faced with one of the show’s deceptively simple maths questions.

The quiz has built a reputation for turning seemingly straightforward questions into surprisingly difficult challenges. With 100 members of the public competing, contestants are tested on common sense, logic and intelligence. Anyone who correctly answers a question that only one percent of the nation managed to get right can win a share of up to £100,000.

One question recently highlighted on TikTok came from the show’s 10 percent round, and it caused plenty of confusion.

Host Lee Mack asked:

“A bat and a ball cost £1.10 in total. The bat costs £1 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?”

At first glance, 10p seems like the obvious answer. If the bat costs £1 and the ball costs 10p, the total would indeed be £1.10.

There is one problem: the bat has to cost £1 more than the ball.

The correct answer is 5p.

If the ball costs 5p, the bat costs £1.05. Together, they add up to exactly £1.10, while the bat remains £1 more expensive than the ball.

Two contestants on the show also answered incorrectly and were eliminated from the competition.

Viewers were not convinced

Would you have got this right?

The question proved just as difficult for people watching at home.

One TikTok user admitted: “I’ve seen the answer and it still doesn’t make sense to me,” while another refused to accept the result, writing: “It’s 10p I don’t care what anyone says.”

Another viewer said: “Why can’t I wrap my brain around it not being 10p.”

For someone watching while nursing a hangover, the question apparently made things even worse: “This question threw my hangover into overdrive.”

One person attempted to break down the calculation for everyone still struggling with it, explaining that the bat costs £1.05 and the ball costs 5p, meaning the bat is exactly £1 more expensive.

The key detail is easy to overlook. The question does not say that the bat costs £1. It says the bat costs £1 more than the ball.

Once that distinction sinks in, the maths works. But with a clock counting down and the pressure of a quiz show, it is easy to see why so many people went straight for 10p.

Another deceptively easy question

Some TikTok users refuse to believe it.

This is hardly unusual for The 1% Club. The ITV quiz has become known for leaving contestants scratching their heads over questions that initially appear incredibly easy.

In another episode, just 25 percent of contestants managed to answer a question that could have looked more at home in a primary school maths lesson.

Viewers were surprised by how many people got it wrong, although those who attempted the question themselves often found they were just as confused.

Perhaps that is the secret of The 1% Club: the questions may look easy, but working out the answer under pressure is a very different challenge.
