Nick Knowles Broke Down in Tears Trying to Bring a Disabled Teenager Home After Nearly Three Years Apart From His Family — And an Impossible Eight-Day DIY SOS Build Almost Broke Him

The presenter feared his heart had overruled his head as mounting pressure threatened an enormous eight-day home renovation.

Nick Knowles was left questioning whether he had taken on more than the DIY SOS team could handle after tensions escalated over an ambitious project to transform a family home for a severely disabled teenager.

During the BBC One programme’s episode on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, Nick and his team faced an extraordinary challenge: adapting a bungalow in Preston so that Daniel Flemen could finally leave hospital and return home to his family.

With an eight-day deadline looming and the scale of the work becoming increasingly apparent, Nick began to doubt whether accepting the project had been the right decision.

Reflecting on the difficulties, the presenter admitted that the evidence suggested he should have turned the job down, even though his emotional investment in the family had made it difficult to walk away.

“The message is coming through loud and clear that actually taking what we’ve done is beyond even our capabilities to get the thing done,” he said.

“I mean, all of the evidence says that I should have said no, other than your heart.

“And you shouldn’t let your heart rule your head in business, should you?”

DIY SOS takes on a life-changing project for the Flemen family

For Daniel’s parents, Nigel and Julie Flemen, the renovation represented far more than a home improvement project. It offered the possibility of ending a prolonged and painful separation from their son.

Daniel was just 13 when doctors discovered a brain tumour in October 2022. Before the diagnosis, his symptoms had initially been mistaken for an ear infection and tonsillitis.

He subsequently required emergency surgery, during which he suffered a severe stroke. The stroke left him with life-altering disabilities and complex care needs.

Reflecting on the devastating consequences, his father Nigel said: “Undoubtedly, that’s what’s caused a lot of the damage which he has today.”

Daniel remained in hospital for several years as the family struggled to adjust to their circumstances.

Julie spent almost three years living in temporary accommodation near the hospital so she could remain close to her son. Meanwhile, Nigel and their daughters stayed at the family home, almost 50 miles away.

The prolonged separation took the family away from the everyday life they had once shared. Making the bungalow suitable for Daniel’s needs was therefore essential if they were to live together again.

Nick and the DIY SOS team took on the demanding renovation in the hope of making that reunion possible. However, the property’s extensive adaptation requirements soon presented serious challenges.

Nick Knowles and Billy Byrne clash over the eight-day deadline

Nick quickly realised that the scale of the renovation made the schedule exceptionally difficult to meet.

As he assessed the work required, he acknowledged just how much needed to be completed in a remarkably short period.

“For us to do this in eight days, we’d literally have to take the roof off and rebuild it in a day, or we wouldn’t get it done. Nobody does that. Nobody’s ever done that,” he explained.

Despite recognising the enormity of the task, Nick chose to press ahead.

But the tight timetable soon put the team under considerable pressure, with tensions rising over when different trades could begin and finish their work.

Electrician Billy Byrne and his crew were unable to start their work until the second day of the project. With the deadline approaching, Nick asked Billy when he expected to finish working on the extension.

“When do you think you might be done in the extension? This evening, or before this evening?” Nick asked.

Billy was clearly frustrated by the pressure, pointing out that his team could not make up for time lost before they had been able to access the area.

“I haven’t got a clue. You can push us and push us and push us, but it’s not our fault that we couldn’t get in there until today… I feel you’re pressurising [me],” he responded.

He went on to remind Nick that the workers could only complete their jobs at a certain pace and within reasonable working hours.

“You’ve got to realise that people can only work to a certain speed and certain hours. That’s all I’m saying, just think about it.”

The exchange highlighted the conflict between the urgency of getting Daniel home and the practical limitations facing the people carrying out the renovation.

For Nick, the confrontation also prompted a deeper sense of responsibility. As the project became increasingly difficult to deliver, he began to feel guilty about the demands he had placed on the team and whether he had underestimated what they could realistically achieve.

Nick Knowles becomes emotional as the family’s return approaches

By the time the project reached its final stages, the pressure had taken a significant emotional and physical toll on everyone involved.

With just 24 hours remaining before the Flemen family were due to return home, Nick struggled to find words to describe the experience.

“I genuinely don’t know how to put into words how tough this has been and how amazing everyone has been,” he admitted.

Although he had spent much of the project questioning whether the team could finish the renovation in time, his doubts were gradually replaced by admiration for the people who had worked tirelessly to make it happen.

Nick reflected on the uncertainty he had experienced throughout the build and the guilt he had felt as the deadline approached.

“How much doubt I had along the way, how much guilt I felt, and how amazing it is that these amazing people have pulled it off. [It’s been] physically and emotionally draining,” he said.

Overcome by emotion, the presenter stepped away from the camera in tears.

His reaction captured the strain behind a project that had pushed both him and the team to their limits. What had initially seemed almost impossible had become a reality thanks to the collective efforts of everyone involved.

Daniel’s homecoming makes the struggle worthwhile

The emotional climax came when the Flemen family finally returned home.

After months and years of separation, the renovation offered them the opportunity to be together again under one roof.

Daniel was delighted to enter a room specially adapted to meet his needs, marking an important moment for the teenager and his family.

For Nick, seeing the family reunited provided a powerful reminder of why he had agreed to take on such an ambitious project in the first place.

The build had brought intense pressure, difficult conversations and moments when he genuinely questioned whether the team could deliver. Yet the family’s homecoming gave the demanding eight-day effort its meaning.

Despite his earlier fears that he had allowed his heart to overrule his head, the finished project demonstrated the difference the team’s work could make to the Flemen family’s lives.

DIY SOS continues on BBC One at 8pm on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.
