Only Connect viewers were ‘screaming at the TV’ after team missed an obvious Wham! connection
Only Connect viewers found themselves doing what quiz-show audiences are often reduced to doing: shouting the answer at the screen.
During the Monday, August 19, 2024 episode, contestants from the Sprouters team were presented with the words Tropicana, Sandwich, Soda and Class in the infamous Connecting Wall round. For viewers watching at home, one connection appeared painfully obvious: Club Tropicana, the 1983 Wham! hit.
But the team failed to spot it, leaving plenty of fans convinced they had seen the answer sitting right in front of them.

Sprouters struggle with the Connecting Wall
The episode of the BBC quiz show, hosted by Victoria Coren Mitchell, saw the Hopsters take on the Sprouters.
The Hopsters are united by their enthusiasm for a pint, while the Sprouters’ team identity is based on their shared interest in the spectator sport of online vegetable growing.
When the Connecting Wall arrived, the Hopsters made a strong start. They scored six points after successfully identifying two groups, including famous fictional planets and words that can come before factor.
The pressure then shifted to the Sprouters.
Their wall contained a collection of apparently unrelated words, among them Tropicana, Sandwich, Soda and Class. The team managed to solve two groups, but the remaining words proved much more difficult.
One of the connections was particularly frustrating for viewers.
Tropicana could be preceded by Club, creating the title of Wham!’s instantly recognisable song, Club Tropicana.

The Wham! answer was right there
Club Tropicana was released by Wham! in 1983, with George Michael on lead vocals. The song was written by Michael and Andrew Ridgeley and was released as a single in July 1983. It reached number four on the UK Singles Chart.
For viewers familiar with the song, seeing Tropicana on the wall alongside the other clues was enough to make the connection seem almost unavoidable.
The Sprouters, however, went in another direction.
They successfully identified Popes and juice drinks, but were left trying to make sense of Clubs and the names of four musical Keiths: Keith Urban, Keith Moon, Keith Flint and Keith Sweat.
The missing link was Urban.
Keith Urban is a musician, while Urban is also the name associated with a number of popes. That connection provided the key to the remaining clues.
By then, however, the opportunity to claim the points had disappeared.

Viewers took to social media
As the round unfolded, frustrated Only Connect fans took to X to vent their disbelief.
“Arrgghh, how did they not see Club Tropicana,” wrote one viewer, Debbie Hoods.
Another viewer, kellyloumugg, said: “I can’t be friends with anyone who doesn’t automatically assume Tropicana is preceded by Club.”
Charlotte Earle suggested the reaction was partly generational, writing that “It’s a certain age of people who are currently screaming club at the TV”.
Another viewer, BaycroftAl, simply posted: “C’mon – Keith & Club!!!”
Even Victoria Coren Mitchell acknowledged the reaction from those watching at home.
“There will be some people shouting at the screen very happy,” she joked as the round came to an end. “That’s you isn’t it? You liked it.”
The episode aired on Monday, August 19, 2024, as the second episode of the show’s 20th series.

Sprouters had the last laugh
The missed connection proved costly in the moment, but it ultimately did little to hurt the Sprouters’ chances in the match.
As the teams moved into the final round, the Sprouters realised the connections they had missed only after the buzzer had sounded and their opportunities had run out.
They were able to put the disappointment behind them, however.
The Sprouters finished the match with 24 points, comfortably ahead of the Hopsters’ 14, winning by 10 points and advancing to the next stage.
The result meant the missed Club Tropicana connection became more of a memorable quiz-show blunder than a decisive setback.
The Hopsters were not eliminated completely, either. They would receive another opportunity in a future episode.

Fans soon congratulated the winning team
Despite the frustration over Club Tropicana, viewers did not hold the mistake against the Sprouters for long.
Once the final score was revealed, many fans turned their attention to the team’s overall performance and congratulated them on securing the win.
“Well done to The Sprouters – a mighty fine quiz team,” wrote AntonDeck.
AllThingsQuiz was similarly impressed, saying: “From the quality of the rounds, The Sprouters are a team to watch this series.”
Another viewer, gwowen, offered a more playful assessment of the earlier blunder: “Well, you’d never guess that they’re not Wham fans.”
The Sprouters ultimately had plenty to celebrate. They may have missed the connection that had an entire audience shouting Club! at the television, but they still walked away from the episode with a 24–14 victory and a place in the next stage.
