Sir Tom Jones Feared His Life Was Over After Being Rushed To Hospital: “I’ve Had A Wonderful Life, But It’s Over Right Now”
Sir Tom Jones has revealed just how frightening his recent health battle became, admitting he genuinely believed he was approaching the end of his life after a severe bout of flu left him hospitalised for a week.
The 86-year-old Welsh music legend made the emotional confession during his return to the stage in Los Angeles on Wednesday night. Speaking to the audience at the Greek Theatre, he recalled the moment he feared he might never recover.
“[I thought] Oh well, this is it, you’ve had a wonderful life, Tommy, but it’s over right now,” he told the crowd.
For a performer whose life has revolved around music for more than seven decades, the experience was a stark reminder of just how quickly everything can change.

A WEEK IN HOSPITAL LEFT THE SINGER FEARING THE WORST
Sir Tom was admitted to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles last week after unexpectedly developing a severe case of flu.
His condition was serious enough to keep him under medical care for seven days, forcing him to step away from his ongoing US tour on doctors’ orders.
The singer later revealed his gratitude towards the medical team who treated him, praising their efforts and saying they had done a “wonderful job”.
His hospital stay also meant postponements to several scheduled performances, disappointing fans who had been looking forward to seeing him on stage.

ONE QUESTION FROM DOCTORS MADE HIS NEXT MOVE CLEAR
Despite the frightening experience, Sir Tom’s determination to return to performing never disappeared.
He recalled how, after spending a week in hospital, members of his medical team asked what he wanted to do next.
His response left little room for doubt.
“I said, ‘I’ve got to get back on the stage’.”
He then made clear just how deeply performing remains part of his identity.
“This is where I belong. I can’t live without this, believe me.”
The emotional admission came as he returned to the Greek Theatre on Wednesday night, marking his comeback following the illness.
TOUR INTERRUPTED AFTER SEVERE FLU FORCED SHOWS TO BE POSTPONED
Sir Tom is currently undertaking the US leg of his Come Gather Round Tour, having completed 21 performances in America so far.
However, his health setback forced changes to the schedule. On October 25, he announced that his Los Angeles performance that night and the following day’s concert in San Diego would have to be rescheduled after receiving medical advice.
In a statement shared on Instagram, he explained:
“Following doctor’s advice, I unfortunately have to reschedule tonight’s show in Los Angeles and tomorrow’s show in San Diego.
“I’ve had a great time these last few weeks, completing 20 shows and singing for wonderful audiences across the USA, but unexpectedly I’ve been hit with a bad case of the flu.”
He also apologised to fans for the disruption and reassured ticket holders that their original tickets would remain valid for the rearranged dates.
Those unable to attend the new dates were advised to contact their original point of purchase to request a refund.
A CAREER THAT HAS SPANNED MORE THAN SEVEN DECADES
Sir Tom’s determination to return to the stage comes after an extraordinary career that has made him one of Britain’s most recognisable musical performers.
His achievements include:
- Three UK number-one singles.
- Four chart-topping albums.
- One Grammy Award.
- Two BRIT Awards.
- A knighthood awarded by Queen Elizabeth II in 2006 for services to music.
Having recently completed his stint on The Voice UK, the singer continues to perform for audiences around the world.
But this latest experience offered a deeply personal glimpse into a side of the music legend fans rarely get to see: a man who, despite decades of success and a lifetime of achievements, was genuinely frightened that his time might be running out.
And after a week in hospital, his first priority was unmistakable — getting back to the stage he says he cannot live without.
