BBC Bosses Should Be Very Worried…match Of The Day Legend Warns The Iconic Show Could Be Next To Fall. Mark Lawrenson has delivered a stark warning over the future of Match of the Day, saying the BBC risks repeating the mistakes that led to Football Focus being axed. With Gary Lineker gone and top pundits increasingly tempted by lucrative podcasts and streaming deals, Lawrenson fears the BBC could struggle to keep its biggest football voices. His toughest warning yet: lose the star pundits, and Match of the Day could face the same fate

Mark Lawrenson fears for Match of the Day as BBC shake-up sparks major warning

Match of the Day legend Mark Lawrenson has issued a stark warning over the future of the BBC’s flagship football programme, suggesting it could eventually suffer the same fate as Football Focus.

The BBC has continued to reshape Match of the Day following Gary Lineker’s departure, with another major change to its pundit line-up announced ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League season. Martin Keown, Dion Dublin, Shay Given, Stephen Warnock, Nedum Onuoha and Theo Walcott were absent from the newly announced list, although they are still expected to feature during the campaign.

Meanwhile, Ashley Young, Robbie Keane, Toby Alderweireld and Thomas Frank have been added to the programme’s expanding group of pundits.

The latest changes come after Mark Chapman, Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan took over presenting duties last season following Lineker’s exit from the BBC after his fallout with bosses.

Lawrenson, who spent years as one of Match of the Day’s most recognisable voices, believes the programme’s continued evolution could eventually create a serious problem.

Writing for the Telegraph, the former Liverpool defender praised the new presenting team but questioned whether Match of the Day can continue to retain its biggest personalities in an increasingly competitive football-media landscape.

His concern centres on the growing number of alternative platforms available to high-profile pundits, particularly podcasts and streaming services.

Lawrenson warned that there could come a point when familiar faces begin asking themselves what they are still getting from Match of the Day — and whether other opportunities have become more attractive.

His warning carries extra weight after the BBC ended Football Focus following 52 years on air in May, as the corporation continued to restructure its football coverage.

Lawrenson pointed to the importance of personalities in keeping viewers loyal to football programmes. In his view, audiences may not always agree with pundits, but familiarity, authority and credibility remain crucial reasons for tuning in.

That makes the BBC’s latest reshuffle potentially significant.

Lineker has already established a major post-BBC career, with The Rest Is Football moving to Netflix during the 2026 World Cup as part of a reported £14million deal. The podcast will also be available on the streaming platform throughout the new season.

Lineker was joined in New York by former Match of the Day colleagues Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, while much of the BBC’s World Cup coverage was based in Salford.

Lawrenson was particularly critical of that decision, describing the BBC’s approach to the tournament as “nuts” and arguing that it sent the wrong message about the corporation’s priorities.

He questioned why the BBC would base its presenting team in Salford for much of the World Cup while Lineker, Shearer and Richards were broadcasting from the United States.

The former defender also suggested that budget decisions could ultimately affect the BBC’s ability to retain its most recognisable football talent.

For now, Match of the Day remains firmly on the BBC schedule, with a new-look line-up preparing for another Premier League campaign.

But Lawrenson’s warning raises an uncomfortable question for BBC bosses: how far can Match of the Day change before the programme loses the familiar personalities that made it an institution in the first place?
