I Love You, I Loved You, And I Will Always Love You — Lionel Messi’s Heartbreaking Final Goodbye To Argentina! For more than 20 years, Lionel Messi carried Argentina’s colours through unbearable pressure, crushing defeats and unforgettable triumphs. Now, the man who once dreamed of lifting the World Cup has finally written his last chapter with the national team. At 39, Messi has admitted that walking away “hurts in the soul” — but he knows the time has come.

Lionel Messi Announces Emotional Argentina Retirement: ‘I Have Nothing More to Give’

Lionel Messi has made the heartbreaking decision to retire from international football, admitting that walking away from Argentina still hurts but insisting he knows the time has come.

The legendary forward confirmed his decision in an emotional statement posted to Instagram, bringing an extraordinary chapter of his career to a close following Argentina’s 1-0 World Cup final defeat to Spain.

Messi, who made his Argentina debut in 2005, said the decision had been incredibly difficult.

“After all this time that has passed since the final, and after much thought, I want to announce to everyone that I am retiring from the National Team,” he wrote.

“It was a decision that hurt, and still hurts, to my core, but I understand that it’s the right time.”

‘I have nothing more to give’

Messi insisted that he had always given everything for the Argentina shirt, including during the difficult years before the team’s remarkable run of success.

“I swear that I always gave my all, not just in the last few years when we won everything, but before that too,” he said.

“I always fought and gave everything for this jersey, to bring you joy and make you proud to be Argentinian through football.”

But after two decades representing his country, Messi acknowledged that he believes a new generation deserves its opportunity.

“There’s not much time left, and chapters are closing, and this is one that hurts me deeply,” he wrote.

“I love, loved, and will always love being on the National Team. I’ve given everything I have; I have nothing more to give, and besides, there are some great young players coming up behind me who deserve to be there.”

Messi thanked Argentina supporters for their love throughout his international career, saying he would now experience the national team from a different perspective.

“I’m going to miss hearing you all from the inside so much,” he said. “Now I’m going to be just one of you, cheering and supporting you from the sidelines.”

A final World Cup filled with emotion

Argentina had reached consecutive World Cup finals after winning the 2022 tournament in Qatar, but Spain denied Messi the chance to finish his international career with another world title.

Despite the defeat, Messi produced another remarkable tournament, finishing with eight goals and four assists.

He also revealed just how physically demanding the final had been.

“My legs couldn’t go on any more,” Messi wrote. “This time I tried to push myself beyond my physical limits, but I couldn’t.”

His decision came during an especially painful period away from football following the death of his father, Jorge, after a long-term illness.

Earlier in the World Cup, Messi’s family had confirmed that Jorge had been dealing with a health-related situation. Following his death, Messi acknowledged that he had been left with “quite a few doubts” about how much longer he wanted to continue playing.

He later said the loss had made him even more certain about the decision to end his international career.

An extraordinary Argentina legacy

Messi leaves international football as Argentina’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player.

Since his debut in 2005, he has scored 125 goals in 207 appearances for his country, while collecting some of the biggest honours available to an international footballer.

His Argentina journey included years of disappointment before ultimately delivering the trophies supporters had long dreamed of, culminating in the 2022 World Cup triumph.

Now, after 20 years, Messi says goodbye to the shirt he has worn through the highest highs and most painful defeats.

“Thank you for all the love and support over these 20 years,” he wrote. “I leave with the peace and pride of having given you, along with my teammates, dreamlike moments.”

“Thank you, God, for making me Argentinian. Go Argentina!”

What comes next for Messi?

Messi has played for Inter Miami since leaving Paris Saint-Germain in 2023, but questions about his future in football remain.

With almost 1,200 senior appearances and close to 1,000 career goals, his playing career has already reached extraordinary heights.

But for Argentina, the image of Messi walking away from the national team will mark the end of an era — one defined by immense pressure, unforgettable triumphs and an unwavering commitment to the famous blue and white shirt.

After two decades of giving everything he had, the Argentina legend believes there is finally nothing more left to give.
