Kelly Clarkson Brings The Sanderson Sisters Back To Life With A Spellbinding Halloween Performance
Halloween television doesn’t get much more entertaining than this. In 2019, Kelly Clarkson transformed her daytime talk show into a magical Hocus Pocus celebration, complete with iconic costumes, spooky dancers and a memorable musical performance.
Dressed as Winifred Sanderson, the unforgettable character played by Bette Midler in Disney’s 1993 Halloween classic, Clarkson was joined by two backup singers portraying Sarah and Mary Sanderson.
But the costumes were only part of the surprise. The trio took on one of the film’s most recognisable musical moments, delivering their own soulful version of “I Put A Spell On You.”
A Halloween Classic Gets A New Twist
Originally released in 1993, Hocus Pocus stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as the three mischievous Sanderson sisters.
Although the film wasn’t an immediate box-office sensation, it gradually developed a devoted following and became a Halloween favourite for generations of viewers.
One of its most memorable scenes features Winifred performing “I Put A Spell On You,” originally made famous by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins in 1956. Her bewitching rendition became closely associated with the film’s spooky atmosphere.
Kelly Clarkson Goes All Out
There have been several anniversary specials and reunions
For her 2019 Halloween special, Clarkson recreated the Sanderson sisters’ unmistakable look, complete with dramatic red hair and a velvet cloak.
As she performed, costumed dancers and performers moved around the studio, turning the song into a full Halloween spectacle rather than an ordinary daytime television cover.
Her powerful vocals, combined with the backup singers and theatrical staging, gave the classic song a fresh personality while paying tribute to the beloved movie.
A Performance Fans Can Revisit Every Halloween
Clarkson’s Hocus Pocus-inspired performance remains a fun reminder of how music, costumes and a little Halloween magic can transform a television studio.
For fans of the original film, seeing the Sanderson sisters brought back in such a playful way is an especially enjoyable treat.
