One of the most frustrating things viewers of a quiz show can experience is when someone makes it all the way to the end only to fall at the final hurdle.
Especially if everyone playing from the sofa can figure out the final answer to score the jackpot, but the poor soul in the studio can’t.
That was the case for an episode of The 1% Club in Australia where two contestants gave the final question a go and neither could figure it out, but people watching at home reckoned it was too easy.
You know the format: 100 audience members are tasked with answering a series of questions of increasing difficulty and everyone who gets a question wrong is knocked out and drops a grand in the prize pot.
Anyone who makes it to the end can walk away with a neat £10,000 or risk it all for the one percent question and their share of the prize pot.

When two Aussie contestants were challenged with the above question and unable to produce the right answer, it had viewers holding their heads in their hands.
Assuming you’ve played honestly, the correct answer to this question is ‘boat’, since the word for it is hidden in the words ‘gazebo atop’.
Once you see it you can’t unsee it, but while the quiz show contestants were realising their mistake, the folks at home were saying it ‘can’t be 1% question’ since it was ‘incredibly easy’ and they ‘got this in about 2 seconds’.
Someone else said they hoped ‘this was the 90% question because my dog got the answer’, while plenty more thought there must be a logic trap in the question, as they said Bonnie’s accomplice might be using a boat but that doesn’t mean she would be using it.

As much as The 1% Club likes to bury tricks within the question, that’s a little far even for them, and the answer was indeed boat.
If you got it right, then feel free to award yourself a biscuit, if you didn’t then perhaps have a commiseration biscuit.
The maxim with quiz shows is ‘it’s only easy if you know the answer’, and there are plenty of apparently ‘easy’ questions which can send contestants spiralling out of the show.
It’s a lot harder to play in the studio than along at home and The 1% Club is no stranger to lots of bright minds dropping out on questions which were supposed to have simple answers.
Then there are some final questions on the show which viewers complained were ‘impossible’ and can result in nobody on the show walking away with any money.a
