Ella Langley Is Taking Over the World Cup

Of course, “Choosin’ Texas” has been a massive crossover hit for the country singer, and it has once again reclaimed its spot at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Songs chart, logging 11 weeks in the top position. This is the most ever for a female singer with a country hit.

The song’s lyrics have also found their way into the World Cup’s commentary as the U.K.’s Sam Matterface snuck in some of the catchy liners while covering a match. The moment came during England and Croatia’s game, when Marcus Rashford’s delivered the game-winning goal for England.

Country Music Is in the World Cup’s Spotlight

Country music has been at the forefront of the FIFA World Cup, with many visitors discovering the genre for the first time.

A German tourist named Freddy went viral for his excitement when he stumbled across Langley’s music on a local radio station. The news got to Langley, and she invited him to come to one of her shows and spend some time backstage.

And you can’t forget the unofficial anthem of this year’s World Cup: John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” Fans from several nations have been singing the song in stadiums, bars, rentals cars and more.

No. 10: “Somethin’ Simple”

Here’s another autobiographical deep cut off Dandelion that ranks high for us in terms of Langley’s all-time best songs. Its lyrics admit that Langley had gotten everything she ever wanted from her musical career — but now, her dreams look a little different than they used to.

No. 9: “Speaking Terms”

No, it’s not a big smash hit like some of her other high-ranking songs. But “Speaking Terms” is Langley at her most introspective, vulnerable and authentic. In its lyrics, she sings her way through a major challenge of faith and grieves a distance that has cropped up between her and God. That’s not something that country stars sing about often, but it sure is relatable.

No. 8: “Weren’t for the Wind”

Langley’s free-flowing “Weren’t for the Wind” is reflective and autobiographical. She wrote it post-fame, and its lyrics are equal parts grateful and melancholic.

No. 7: “Dandelion”

The lyrics on her Dandelion title track compare Langley to the titular yellow flower: Colorful, underrated and resilient as heck. Fun fact: Langley says that while she was in the process of making her Dandelion album, she learned that dandelion tea is a liver detox. That made it all the more meaningful as a symbol for an album she wrote about growing up and maturing, after her last album, Hungover.

No. 6: “Butterfly Season”

“Butterfly Season” is a personal track reminding us to take a moment to recognize and celebrate our growth. Sometimes it’s hard to see just how far you’ve come in the midst of trying to make it through, but stopping to take a look at yourself in the mirror every so often will reveal just how far you’ve come. It’s simple, but it resonates with anyone who’s gone through a tough season.

No. 5: “Loving Life Again”

Langley has said that she was inspired to write “Loving Life Again” after emerging from a period where she was struggling with mental health, despite the fact that her career had never been hotter. She’s never shied away from releasing songs about her struggles with depression and anxiety.

No. 4: “You Look Like You Love Me” feat. Riley Green

To a mainstream audience, this is the hit that put Ella Langley on the map. She and Riley Green play the part of strangers-turned-lovers in this fun, old-school talk-singing song. Green may have been the bigger star when “You Look Like You Love Me” was cut, but the vision is all Langley: A deeper look through her catalogue proves that.

Written by Ella Langley, this Morgan Wallen duet is quickly becoming another smash hit for the songwriter. Following other hits like “Choosin’ Texas” and “Be Her”, “I Can’t Love You Anymore” is holding its own on the country music charts. It’s a brooding heartbreaker, and Wallen and Langley’s vocal harmonies are smooth as silk.

No. 2: “Be Her”

Pulsing and delightfully retro, “Be Her” is a reminder that Langley isn’t always singing traditional country. Shimmering disco runs and hand claps punctuate this catchy number, and we’re down to boogie! The song is easily one of the biggest hits of her career thus far and we’re not surprised – it’s catchy as heck.

No. 1: “Choosin’ Texas”

What CAN’T this song do? “Choosin’ Texas” is a twangy co-write with Miranda Lambert, Luke Dick and Joybeth Taylor. At face value, it seems a little too country to be a massive crossover hit. But this song was an record-busting all-genre ‘Billboard’ chart smash, and it continues to bring all kinds of new fans to the country genre.
