‘Real Reason’ Doria Ragland Won’t Follow Meghan Markle to the UK Revealed as Sussexes Prepare for Major Family Move

Meghan Markle is preparing to begin a dramatically different chapter in Britain with Prince Harry and their children — but one of the people closest to the Duchess reportedly will not be making the move with them.

Doria Ragland, Meghan’s mother, is expected to remain in California rather than relocate to the UK when the Sussex family establishes its new British base.

Despite the potential for dramatic speculation, reports suggest there is a straightforward explanation: Doria has built an independent life near Los Angeles and is not ready to leave it behind.

Her decision does not appear to signal any rift with Meghan or Harry. Instead, she is expected to remain closely involved with the family even as thousands of miles separate them.

Why Doria Ragland is staying in California

According to reporting cited by Entertainment Daily, Doria plans to remain in the United States because of the home, routines and personal life she has established in California.

The report said she has a life there that she is “not ready to leave behind.”

There is currently no indication that Doria objects to the Sussexes’ return to Britain or that her decision reflects tension within the family.

She simply appears unwilling to uproot her own life because her daughter is relocating.

Doria is also expected to continue spending time with Meghan, Harry, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet after their move, although exactly how frequently the family will travel between Britain and California has not been disclosed.

Meghan will lose one major advantage of California life

Even without any family disagreement, Doria remaining in Los Angeles will represent a considerable change for Meghan.

Since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex settled in California after stepping away from working royal duties in 2020, Doria has lived far closer to the family than most of Harry’s relatives.

She has repeatedly been described as an important presence in their private lives, while Harry is also understood to share a warm relationship with his mother-in-law.

For Archie and Lilibet, their grandmother has been one of the relatives geographically closest to them throughout much of their childhood.

The move to Britain effectively reverses that situation.

Doria will suddenly be an ocean away, while King Charles and Harry’s other British relatives will be far more accessible.

Doria has been part of Meghan’s British life before

Britain is certainly not unfamiliar territory for Meghan’s mother.

Doria became one of the most recognisable figures surrounding Meghan’s 2018 royal wedding when she accompanied her daughter and attended the ceremony at St George’s Chapel as Meghan’s only immediate family member present.

Later that year, she appeared alongside Meghan and Harry at Kensington Palace during the launch of Together: Our Community Cookbook, one of Meghan’s earliest major charitable initiatives as a working royal.

Doria also travelled to Britain around Archie’s birth in 2019.

But the circumstances surrounding Meghan’s latest return could hardly be more different.

In 2018, Meghan was entering royal life.

In 2026, she is returning after six years outside the working monarchy and is expected to continue pursuing her own commercial and media interests.

Archie and Lilibet face an even bigger change

The transition will arguably be most significant for Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five.

Reports say both children are expected to enter the British school system after the family relocates.

Archie was born in Britain in 2019 but moved to North America while still very young. Lilibet, born in California in 2021, has spent almost her entire childhood in the United States.

Their move therefore represents far more than another family visit.

Britain will become part of their everyday lives — from school and friendships to the relatives they can see more regularly.

For years, their maternal grandmother has been nearby while their paternal grandfather lived thousands of miles away.

That balance is about to change considerably.

The Sussexes are not completely leaving California behind

Doria remaining in Los Angeles also makes more sense because Harry and Meghan reportedly intend to retain significant ties to California.

The Sussexes are expected to keep their Montecito home while establishing a private residence in Britain. They are also reported to retain their property in Portugal.

Their return is therefore not necessarily a permanent abandonment of the life they created in America.

Meghan continues to operate her lifestyle brand, As Ever, while Harry maintains professional and charitable connections on both sides of the Atlantic.

That leaves plenty of opportunities for the family to return to California and spend time with Doria.

She could also travel to Britain herself without permanently relocating.

King Charles could become a much bigger presence

 

One of the most striking consequences of the move concerns King Charles.

While Doria becomes geographically more distant, King Charles could find himself considerably closer to Archie and Lilibet.

The King has had relatively limited opportunities to spend time with Harry’s children during their years in California.

That changed significantly during the Sussex family’s July 2026 visit to Britain, when Charles reunited with Archie and Lilibet after several years apart.

Reports surrounding the upcoming move suggest the King welcomes the prospect of seeing his younger son and grandchildren more frequently in a private capacity.

Harry and Meghan are not expected to return as working royals, but living in Britain would remove one of the biggest practical obstacles to greater family contact: distance.

Doria’s decision does not mean a family split

Nothing currently reported suggests Doria plans to withdraw from the Sussex family’s life.

Instead, the arrangement reflects the realities of a family increasingly spread across several countries.

Doria can remain based in California while visiting Britain.

Harry and Meghan can travel back to the United States.

The family could also spend time together in Portugal.

What Doria apparently does not intend to do is permanently abandon the life she has established simply because Meghan is entering another phase of hers.

Meghan’s second British chapter will look nothing like the first

The contrast with 2018 is striking.

When Doria watched Meghan marry Prince Harry at Windsor, her daughter was becoming a working member of the Royal Family.

This time, Meghan is expected to return as a private individual.

Harry will remain a non-working member of the monarchy, while Archie and Lilibet will attend British schools without adopting the same public royal lifestyle as Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

The Sussexes are also expected to live in a private, non-royal home rather than return to a Palace property.

For Doria, then, this is not about watching Meghan re-enter the institution she left six years ago.

It is about watching her daughter attempt to build an entirely different kind of British family life.

And while that new chapter will place an ocean between them, the reported explanation behind Doria’s decision is far less dramatic than the headlines might suggest.
