HARRY AND MEGHAN’S UK RETURN COULD CREATE A ROYAL ROLE NOBODY SAW COMING—NOT WORKING ROYALS, NOT COMPLETE OUTSIDERS, BUT SOMETHING BEING DESCRIBED AS “PRIVATE ROYALS-PLUS.”

Harry and Meghan’s ‘Private Royals-Plus’ Plan Faces One Major Problem — And It Could Come Down to William and Kate

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may be hoping to find a middle ground as they prepare for an extended period in the UK — remaining private citizens while still appearing alongside members of the Royal Family on important occasions.

But according to a royal source cited by The Sunday Times, turning that idea into reality could prove far more complicated than it sounds.

The proposed arrangement has reportedly been described as “private royals-plus” — a role that would allow the Sussexes to maintain their private status while occasionally joining working royals at family events and other public occasions.

The biggest obstacle, however, may be the relationship between Harry and his older brother, Prince William.

A return to Britain with a very different role

Harry and Meghan stepped back as senior working royals in 2020 and subsequently built their life in California.

Their reported plan to spend an extended period back in Britain would therefore represent a significant change, particularly because sources say they do not intend to return as full-time working members of the monarchy.

Instead, the idea appears to be finding a position somewhere between royal and private life.

One source told The Sunday Times that the Sussexes would need to be “much more private than working” while potentially being seen at major family occasions, including Christmas at Sandringham.

On paper, it might sound like a compromise.

In practice, there is one enormous question hanging over the proposal: would William and Catherine agree to it?

The source reportedly questioned how such an arrangement could work given the brothers’ strained relationship.

William and Kate could hold the key

The issue is particularly sensitive because Harry’s return would potentially place him and Meghan in the same royal spaces as William and Catherine.

That could mean family occasions where the Sussexes and the Waleses would be expected to appear together despite years of reported tension.

A royal source also warned that Harry and Meghan’s business activities could receive much closer attention if they establish themselves in Britain.

The concern, according to the report, is that commercial activity associated with their California life could be viewed differently if carried out while they are simultaneously appearing alongside working members of the Royal Family.

The source suggested that trying to replicate their “Montecito playbook” in the Cotswolds would not necessarily be well received.

The return may not be permanent

There is another twist.

Two sources reportedly told Page Six that Harry and Meghan’s UK stay is not expected to be permanent.

Instead, the couple could remain in Britain for an extended period — potentially six months, a year or even longer — before deciding what comes next.

One source suggested that because they remain private individuals, the couple could theoretically consider other countries in the future.

That makes the current UK plan less like a permanent royal comeback and more like an experiment in reconnecting with Britain and Harry’s family.

Charles is reportedly a major reason

According to a royal insider cited by Page Six, King Charles is an important reason behind Harry and Meghan’s decision to spend more time in Britain.

The couple reportedly want their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to have stronger relationships with members of Harry’s family.

That could make family occasions particularly significant if the Sussexes do establish themselves in the UK for an extended period.

But their presence could also force difficult questions about who attends major royal events and in what capacity.

Royal reporter Tom Sykes reportedly warned that the move could create additional challenges for William and the monarchy, particularly if Harry seeks to attend high-profile occasions such as Christmas or Remembrance events.

For now, there is no confirmed new royal role for Harry and Meghan.

The “private royals-plus” idea remains a reported proposal rather than an announced arrangement.

And that may be the most intriguing part of the story: Harry and Meghan could be coming back to Britain, but finding a place for them within the royal family’s public life may prove considerably harder than finding a home.
