Matthew McConaughey has already delivered one of his defining performances as Rust Cohle in True Detective season 1. But his upcoming 2026 crime thriller The Rivals of Amziah King could give the actor an even more ambitious showcase.

Despite having far less time than True Detective season 1 to develop its story, the movie has earned attention for combining several genres within a single narrative. Critics have praised its scope and genre-blending approach, describing it as both a tightly constructed crime thriller and an ambitious epic.

McConaughey plays the titular Amziah King, a foster parent and singing beekeeper whose relationship with his troubled charge sits at the center of the story. The film incorporates elements of crime thrillers, detective stories, Westerns, film noir, musicals, and character drama.

That combination makes the movie an unusually bold proposition.

The Neo-Western has enjoyed renewed popularity since 2018, helped in large part by the success of Yellowstone and the wider body of work from Taylor Sheridan. Even so, The Rivals of Amziah King takes a considerably stranger approach to the genre.

Another reason The Rivals of Amziah King feels like a natural fit for McConaughey is its connection to the Southern Gothic thriller.

Although the film incorporates musical sequences, Western elements, and character-focused drama, its foundation remains firmly rooted in the Southern Gothic tradition. That is familiar territory for McConaughey, who has repeatedly delivered memorable performances in Southern-set thrillers.

His work in The Lincoln Lawyer, The Paperboy, Killer Joe, Mud, and True Detective has established a clear connection between the actor and the genre.

With The Rivals of Amziah King, McConaughey once again finds himself in a Southern thriller, but this time within a story that pushes the format in several unexpected directions.
