‘AFTER YEARS OF W.A.R, HEARTBREAK, AND TIME-TRAVEL CHAOS… LOVE FINALLY DEMANDED ITS ANSWERS.’ The ‘Outlander’ series finale has left fans emotionally wrecked as long-buried romances, impossible reunions, and heartbreaking goodbyes finally collide in one last chapter. But while some couples found peace at last, others were pulled into endings so unexpected that viewers are still arguing over them hours later.

Claire and Jamie and Roger and Bri in 'Outlander'
Starz

Over the course of Outlander‘s eight seasons, viewers see Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) face plenty of battles and hardships once the former is thrust from the 20th century back to the 18th century. But through it all, the World War II nurse and her Scottish Highlander have remained devoted to each other, their love serving as the backbone for the entirety of the series. It’s fitting that their time-defying bond is the focus of the series finale.

But do Jamie and Claire defy their perilous circumstances and actually end up together in Season 8? What about the Starz drama’s other couples that fans have gotten to know over the years, like Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and Roger (Richard Rankin), as well as Fergus (César Domboy) and Marsali (Lauren Lyle)? Whether you want to spoil yourself before reaching Season 8 or you’re looking for a romance recap, Swooon has you covered. Below, find out the fates of every Outlander couple.  (Warning: Spoilers for Outlander Season 8 ahead!)

Do Jamie and Claire end up together in Outlander?

The short answer is… yes? Jamie and Claire have been driven apart constantly throughout their romance, even being separated by time for 20 years between Seasons 2 and 3. At the start of Season 8, Jamie found out that he was going to die in battle via Frank’s (Tobias Menzies) book about the Scots’ role in the American Revolution. The Battle of Kings Mountain does come to pass, and Jamie does indeed get shot in the chest, despite winning the fight.

Devastatingly, Claire lies next to Jamie’s body for (seemingly) days in the aftermath. She insists that Jamie just needs to “rest” when others try to pull her away. Meanwhile, Jamie’s spirit takes a journey through time. Jamie watches Claire through her window in the 20th century, a callback to an early scene in the series. It was also Jamie’s spirit who planted the forget-me-not flowers at the stones, which Claire was looking for when she accidentally traveled through time.

After his journey is done, the show cuts back to Claire lying with Jamie. Her hair has gone white, a sign of her newfound magical healing powers. Jamie opens his eyes at the same time as Claire, gasping in unison before the screen cuts to black. Their fate isn’t made entirely clear, but no matter when or where they are, their eyes open together. So, it can be presumed that Jamie and Claire end up together.

Do Brianna and Roger end up together in Outlander?

Brianna and Roger don’t have an easy go of it throughout the series, either. They, too, have been separated by kidnappings and time travel, but thankfully, they both make it out of Season 8 alive. Neither fight at King’s Mountain, though Roger does assist the injured. Presumably, Brianna and Roger live out the rest of their days in the 18th century with their three kids.

Fergus and Marsali in 'Outlander' Season 8

Starz

Do Fergus and Marsali end up together in Outlander?

Fergus and Marsali are the only couple not to get a happy ending (aside from Jamie and Claire, depending on how you interpret their final moments). In Season 8’s seventh episode, a British loyalist sets fire to Fergus’ print shop. Marsali gets her daughters out, but Fergus has to rush to the roof to save his two sons, who were stargazing. He’s successful, but before he can escape himself, Fergus falls through the roof and to his death. Marsali and the Frasers are devastated in the aftermath. Marsali finds out that she’s pregnant with Fergus’ child after his funeral. (Brutal.)

Ian and Rachel in 'Outlander' Season 8

Starz

Who does Ian end up with in Outlander?

Ian’s (John Bell) romance with Wahionhaweh (Morgan Holmstrom), a Mohawk Native American whom he nicknames Emily, doesn’t last, but he does find a wife eventually. He meets Rachel (Izzy Meikle-Small), a Quaker nurse, in Season 7. They marry and have a child before Season 8 ends. Ian makes it out of the final battle alive, so it’s likely he settles down on Fraser’s Ridge with his growing family.

Lord John in 'Outlander' Season 8

Starz

Who does Lord John end up with in Outlander?

Poor Lord John (David Berry) doesn’t find a lasting love in Outlander. After falling in unrequited love with Jamie back in Season 3, John doesn’t get another fully fleshed-out love interest until his stepbrother Percy Wainwright (Michael Lindall) comes back into his life in Season 8. But Percy betrays John by using his sexuality against him. Technically, Percy’s actions come about because of Captain Richardson’s (Ben Lambert) blackmail, who kidnaps John in hopes of changing the outcome of the American Revolution.

But even once Claire and Jamie rescue him, John can’t forgive Percy. After he tells Percy as much, John walks out of Percy’s home and hears a gunshot ring out. Percy dies by suicide.

William and Amaranthus in 'Outlander' Season 8

Starz

Who does William end up with in Outlander?

Jamie’s son (and Lord John’s surrogate son), William (Charles Vandervaart), gets a brief romance with his cousin’s “widow,” Amaranthus (Carla Woodcock), in Season 8. But when he discovers that his cousin is still alive and Amaranthus is fully aware that his death was faked — her husband wanted to join the American rebels, and she wanted to protect their child from being labeled the son of a traitor — Williams ends their budding relationship. He closes out the series without romantic love, but he does find himself in a good place with his fathers, Jamie and John.
