Evan James Takes a Major Risk With Chris Stapleton Classic on The Voice — But Adam Levine’s Final Decision Leaves His Future Uncertain
Evan James brought his country-rock style to The Voice Season 30 with an energetic performance of Chris Stapleton’s Midnight Train to Memphis, hoping to secure a place in the Live Shows.
The 22-year-old Michigan native impressed Adam Levine and Kelly Clarkson with his gritty vocals and determination during the competition’s first-ever Cut Week.
However, despite the praise, James was left fighting for one final opportunity to remain in the competition.
From Christmas Tree Farming to The Voice Stage

James is a recent Michigan State University graduate and an eighth-generation Christmas tree farmer who is pursuing a career in music.
After defeating teammate Luke Curran during the Battle rounds, he advanced to Cut Week as the only country singer remaining on Team Adam.
For his crucial performance, James selected Midnight Train to Memphis, a Chris Stapleton song released on the 2017 album From A Room: Volume 2.
The blues-influenced country-rock track was a challenging choice, particularly because of Stapleton’s distinctive, powerful vocal style.
Before performing, James explained that Stapleton was his favorite artist and that the song would allow him to showcase a side of his voice audiences had not yet heard.
Kelly Clarkson and Adam Levine Praise His Performance
James delivered a spirited rendition, combining rough-edged vocals with a commanding stage presence.
His performance highlighted his country influences while incorporating the soulful rock qualities that have become part of his musical identity.
Clarkson praised the young singer for taking on such a demanding song.
She particularly enjoyed his vocal delivery and the powerful ending, which she interpreted as evidence of his determination to remain in the competition.
Levine was equally enthusiastic.
The Maroon 5 frontman admitted that James continued to reveal new vocal qualities, especially the rasp in his voice.
He praised the singer’s energy, song choice and overall performance, describing his work as excellent.
Cut Week Brings a Difficult Decision

Season 30 introduced Cut Week as a major elimination round, reducing the field from 28 contestants to 12 before a public vote determined one additional place.
Each coach selected two artists to advance automatically, while the remaining five competed for a final position.
Levine chose Lexi Stephens and Connor Closs as his first two advancing contestants.
After hearing the remaining performances, he awarded his third spot to Dakota Cohen.
The decision meant James did not immediately qualify for the Live Shows, despite receiving positive feedback from both coaches.
Evan James Gets One Final Chance

James’ elimination was not necessarily the end of his journey.
Viewers were given the opportunity to vote one of the 16 eliminated contestants back into the competition, completing the Top 13.
Voting closed at 3 a.m. Eastern on Tuesday, November 3, with the result scheduled to be announced during the November 9 episode of The Voice at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
For James, the public vote offers another chance to pursue his musical ambitions after taking a risk with a song by his favorite artist.
Although Adam Levine ultimately chose another singer, Evan James’ Chris Stapleton performance demonstrated the country-rock talent that brought him this far in the competition.
