SO DISRESPECTFUL! Ricky Schroder’s Farewell To His Former Co-Star Has Sparked Furious Backlash, With Critics Taking Issue With The Way He Chose To Remember The Late Country Legend. Instead Of Bringing Comfort To Grieving Fans, His Message Has Now Become A Controversy Of Its Own.

Ricky Schroder Faces Fierce Backlash Over Dolly Parton Tribute After Bringing Politics Into His Farewell

The actor has been getting severe criticism over a 'foul' Instagram remembrance post, where he took a swipe at Parton's politics just hours after the news of her death broke. Above, in 2015

Ricky Schroder is facing a wave of criticism after his tribute to Dolly Parton included references to political and social issues just hours after news of the country legend’s death.

Schroder, 56, who played Parton’s father in two television films inspired by her childhood, shared a photo of himself with the singer on Instagram and thanked her for choosing him to portray her “Movie Daddy.”

But the post also included a pointed reference to areas where he disagreed with Parton, specifically her support for transgender people and COVID-19 vaccination.

That choice quickly became the focus of the reaction.

Rather than seeing the message as a simple remembrance, many followers accused Schroder of turning a tribute to Parton into a statement about his own beliefs.

Schroder mixed affection with disagreement in his tribute

'I didnt agree with her advocating for Transgender & Covid Vaccine support…but Loved her anyway. Thank you for choosing me Dolly to be your Movie Daddy,' he wrote in the tribute

In his Instagram post, Schroder wrote that he “didn’t agree” with Parton’s advocacy on transgender issues and COVID vaccines, but said he loved her regardless.

He then thanked the singer for casting him as her father in Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors in 2015 and its 2016 follow-up, Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love.

The films dramatized Parton’s childhood and family life, with Schroder portraying Robert Lee Parton.

For some fans, that professional history made the wording of his tribute even more surprising.

They argued that the moment should have focused on the personal connection he shared with Parton and the opportunity she gave him, rather than highlighting disagreements immediately after her death.

Katie Couric and Boy George joined the reaction

Schroder also posted a clip of Parton sharing her support for the COVID-19 vaccine and wrote: 'I warned Dolly to not support the Experiment. Wished she listened [sad face emoji]'

The criticism was not limited to fans.

Journalist Katie Couric responded simply with “ick,” while Boy George wrote, “Oh shut up!”

Actor Jay Huguley also criticized the phrasing, taking issue with Schroder’s use of “I loved her anyway.”

Across Instagram and Threads, commenters repeatedly made the same complaint: that there was no need to mention what Schroder disliked about Parton’s views in a memorial post.

One commenter described it as a “backhanded tribute,” while another called it “tone deaf.”

Others said Schroder could simply have honored Parton without making her death a vehicle for political commentary.

The Daily Mail reported that it had contacted Schroder for comment but had not received a response.

A second post caused even more controversy

The backlash intensified after Schroder posted additional material to his Instagram Stories.

He shared a clip of Parton discussing her support for the COVID-19 vaccine and added that he had warned her not to support what he called “the Experiment.”

He then wrote that he wished she had listened.

That message prompted another round of criticism, particularly because Parton had publicly supported vaccination and donated $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, money that helped fund research connected to the Moderna vaccine.

Commenters accused Schroder of exploiting the immediate aftermath of her death to revisit a disagreement she could no longer respond to.

Parton had long spoken about treating people with respect

Schroder played Parton's father in the bio TV movies Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors (2015) and Dolly Parton's Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love (2016)

Schroder’s post also drew attention back to Parton’s long-established public support for LGBTQIA+ people.

Parton, a devout Christian, had spoken repeatedly about refusing to judge others.

In a 2014 interview with Billboard, she said she tried “to love everybody” and argued that people who judge others should examine their own behavior.

She later addressed controversy surrounding North Carolina’s anti-transgender “bathroom bill” in 2016, saying that everyone should be treated with respect and should have the chance to be who they are.

Those statements became part of why critics found Schroder’s tribute particularly jarring.

Several commenters noted that Parton had built much of her public image around compassion, tolerance and avoiding divisive political rhetoric.

Their connection went beyond a single project

Parton was outspoken about her support for the transgender community and her COVID-19 vaccine advocacy

Schroder’s relationship with Parton came through one of the most personal projects of her later career.

Coat of Many Colors was based on the story of Parton’s childhood in rural Tennessee, including her relationship with her parents and the poverty her family experienced.

Schroder played Robert Lee Parton, the father whose life and personality helped shape the future singer.

He reprised the role in the Christmas sequel the following year.

Because Parton had personally selected Schroder to portray her father, his post did include genuine gratitude toward her.

But for many followers, that sentiment was overshadowed by the decision to open the message with disagreement.

Fans accused him of making the tribute about himself

The recurring criticism was not simply about Schroder’s politics.

It was about timing and focus.

Commenters argued that memorial posts are generally intended to honor the person who died, rather than list the ways someone disagreed with them.

One fan questioned why Schroder felt the need to bring up issues he opposed at all.

Another wrote that he could have “left the ‘I didn’t agree with…’ part out.”

Several others said the post made the tribute feel more like a statement about Schroder than a remembrance of Parton.

That same criticism followed the Instagram Story about vaccines, which many viewed as an unnecessary escalation.

Parton’s death has prompted tributes across entertainment and politics

Parton died Tuesday at age 80 following what her representatives described as a brief battle with cancer.

Her death prompted an enormous outpouring from the music industry, Hollywood and public figures across the country.

Among those paying tribute were Reba McEntire, Maren Morris, Kacey Musgraves, Sarah Jessica Parker, Hillary Clinton and others.

President Donald Trump also issued a tribute and ordered American flags lowered nationwide for one week in her honor.

Parton’s career stretched across six decades and produced some of the most enduring songs in country and popular music, including “Jolene,” “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You.”

A tribute overshadowed by the words around it

Schroder’s message was clearly intended, at least in part, as an acknowledgment of someone who had trusted him with a deeply personal role.

But the reaction showed how quickly that intention was lost once political disagreement became part of the farewell.

Instead of focusing on Schroder’s connection to Parton through Coat of Many Colors, the discussion shifted almost entirely to what he chose to say about transgender rights and vaccines.

For many fans, that was the problem.

At a moment when people around the world were remembering Dolly Parton for her music, kindness and extraordinary career, they believed Schroder’s post centered the one thing a tribute did not need: the reasons he disagreed with her.
