Prince Harry has spent years describing the emotional difficulties of growing up inside the Royal Family, including what he has called the “generational trauma” passed down through generations.

Yet resurfaced footage from his teenage years offers a strikingly different glimpse of his relationship with his father, now King Charles III.

Filmed after a polo match in Anglesey, north Wales, in June 2003, the relaxed exchange shows an 18-year-old Harry sitting alongside Charles and his older brother Prince William, then 20, joking about the match and receiving warm praise from his father.

For body language expert Judi James, the clip does not erase Harry’s later account of his childhood. But she argues that it reveals a degree of affection and attentiveness from Charles that may be easy to overlook when viewing their relationship only through the prism of the bitter royal fallout of recent years.

The conversation unfolds casually as the three royals discuss their performance on the polo field.

Charles asks Harry whether he scored two goals.

Harry corrects him: he scored three.

His father immediately responds with praise, telling him: “Well done, brilliant.”

William then jokingly points out that he had been doing “all the hard work” in the middle of the pitch despite failing to score himself.

Harry fires back in the way younger brothers often do, teasing William and calling him a “spoon” after claiming he nearly fell off his horse while trying to pass him the ball.

Charles appears amused by the exchange and asks what Harry means by the word, prompting Harry to reassure him that it is not a swear word.

It is an ordinary family conversation, but James believes the apparently insignificant details reveal something deeper about the dynamics between father and sons.

‘Watchful attention’ toward his youngest son

James told the Daily Mail that Charles’s famously awkward physical manner is visible, but so too is what she describes as a distinct tenderness toward Harry.

Rather than relying on obvious physical affection, Charles appears to communicate through proximity, sustained attention and a softer tone of voice.

According to James, Charles repeatedly positions himself close to Harry during the conversation.

When another polo player joins the group, Charles remains next to his younger son, while William sits slightly farther away.

She argues that Harry receives what amounts to Charles’s “prime” attention during parts of the footage.

William, by contrast, appears more confident and comfortable taking control of the conversation.

James interprets the distinction as two very different forms of paternal interaction.

With William, Charles appears to behave more like one adult speaking to another.

With Harry, she sees something gentler and more protective.

Harry and Charles appeared to share the same awkwardness

The most revealing contrast, according to James, may be between the brothers themselves.

William appears relaxed, socially confident and comfortable in front of the cameras.

Harry seems more self-conscious.

He sits hunched over at times, partly hides his face behind his hand and glass, and looks noticeably more bashful.

James believes those signals may have created a natural affinity between Harry and his father.

Charles himself was often portrayed as shy and socially uncomfortable when he was younger, particularly in comparison with Princess Diana, whose ease in public settings became one of her defining qualities.

James argues that Harry may have inherited more of Charles’s reserve, while William appears to have inherited more of Diana’s public confidence.

That similarity, she suggests, could explain why Charles seems to respond particularly carefully to Harry in the clip.

Small gestures rather than obvious affection

Charles has never been known as an especially tactile public figure.

James notes that physical affection was far more visibly associated with Diana, who famously broke with some of the more restrained traditions surrounding royal parenting.

Charles’s affection, by comparison, has often appeared less demonstrative.

In the 2003 footage, James points instead to smaller gestures.

Charles gives Harry sustained eye contact and appears to soften his voice when speaking directly to him.

At one point, he notices Harry holding a banana and jokingly asks whether it is his “method of recovery” after playing polo.

James describes his expression and tone as indulgent and nurturing.

Even when William is speaking, she says Charles’s physical position remains oriented toward Harry.

He turns his head toward his elder son but keeps his body close to the younger one.

Those gestures are open to interpretation, and body language analysis cannot establish exactly what any individual was feeling.

But they do provide a revealing visual counterpoint to the much more complicated picture Harry has presented of his upbringing as an adult.

Harry’s account in Spare

Harry’s memoir Spare, published in 2023, placed his position as William’s younger brother at the centre of his interpretation of royal life.

He described himself as the “shadow,” the “support” and the “Plan B” behind the future King.

In one of the book’s most memorable passages, Harry wrote that he had been brought into the world in case something happened to William — even imagining himself as a potential source of a kidney, blood or bone marrow.

The language was deliberately stark.

For Harry, being the “spare” was not simply a description of his place in the line of succession. It became a symbol of what he saw as a childhood shaped by hierarchy, emotional distance and expectations he had never chosen.

He has also repeatedly spoken about what he calls “genetic pain” or generational trauma within the Royal Family.

During his 2021 appearance on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, Harry suggested that Charles had parented him partly according to the model he himself experienced from Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

Harry said his goal as a father was to “break the cycle” rather than pass the same patterns on to Archie and Lilibet.

Harry has also spoken warmly about Charles

Yet Harry’s public descriptions of his father have never been entirely negative.

Years before the relationship deteriorated so publicly, he often spoke affectionately about Charles.

During a 2017 appearance connected with BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Harry referred to his father as “Pa” and discussed how they could spend hours talking about Charles’s longstanding interest in environmental issues.

Harry also acknowledged that he had increasingly found himself seeking his father’s advice as he grew older.

That same period saw William and Harry publicly praise Charles for supporting them following Princess Diana’s death.

Both brothers were staying at Balmoral when Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997.

Charles was left with the devastating task of telling his sons their mother had died.

Harry later reflected that he could not imagine how difficult that must have been for any parent.

He said Charles had been “there for us” at a time when the boys had lost one of the two people at the centre of their lives.

The night Charles told Harry Diana had died

Harry revisited that moment in far greater detail in Spare.

According to his account, Charles sat beside him on a bed and addressed him tenderly before explaining that Diana had suffered severe head injuries and had not survived the crash.

Harry remembered not crying immediately.

He also wrote that Charles did not hug him.

That absence became one of the details frequently cited in discussions about emotional restraint within the Royal Family.

Yet Harry also recalled Charles placing a hand on his knee and attempting to reassure him.

The memory therefore illustrates the same complicated dynamic visible in the polo footage years later: affection expressed in restrained, sometimes awkward ways rather than through obvious physical comfort.

‘Darling boy’

Charles has also used affectionate language for Harry over the years.

He has referred to his younger son as his “darling boy,” while numerous public appearances before the royal split showed the pair laughing and talking easily together.

James believes their style of communication may simply have been more understated than many people expect from a close parent-child relationship.

She argues that when Charles and Harry engage directly in the 2003 clip, their conversation becomes quieter and more intimate.

Their voices lower and their speech speeds up as though they are retreating briefly into a private exchange.

William’s style, by contrast, is more confident and outward-facing.

In James’s interpretation, that creates an intriguing reversal of the traditional “heir and spare” narrative.

William may have occupied the more important constitutional position, but Harry appears in this particular footage to receive more of his father’s gentle attention.

One clip cannot settle a complicated family history

Of course, a few minutes of archive footage cannot prove or disprove Harry’s later account of his childhood.

Families can contain affection and resentment simultaneously.

A father can care deeply for a child while still making mistakes that the child experiences as painful.

And a warm moment captured by television cameras in 2003 does not provide a complete record of what happened in private across decades.

James’s analysis is therefore best understood as one interpretation of the footage rather than a definitive verdict on the relationship.

Still, the clip is notable precisely because it shows a version of Charles and Harry that has become much harder to imagine after years of lawsuits, interviews, memoirs and public accusations.

They appear relaxed.

Harry teases his brother.

Charles praises him.

And father and son repeatedly fall into quieter exchanges of their own.

Their relationship has since endured extraordinary strain

The warmth visible in those earlier years makes the later breakdown even more striking.

Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from their roles as senior working royals in 2020 and relocated to North America.

In the years that followed, Harry publicly discussed the Royal Family through the Sussexes’ interview with Oprah Winfrey, their Netflix documentary and Spare.

His relationship with both Charles and William became increasingly strained.

Yet the bond with his father never appears to have been severed completely.

Harry has continued to express a desire for reconciliation, and contact between father and son has gradually resumed despite the wider family tensions.

Harry’s return brings Charles back into focus

The resurfaced footage arrives at a particularly significant moment.

Harry is approaching his 42nd birthday on September 15, shortly after returning to Britain with Meghan, 45, and their children.

The Sussexes are expected to live in a private, non-royal residence outside London while Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, attend school in the UK.

They remain non-working members of the Royal Family, and their return does not restore the official roles they gave up in 2020.

But geographically, Harry is now far closer to his father than he has been for much of the past six years.

Harry is understood to have recently visited Charles at Highgrove House in Gloucestershire following an Invictus Games event in Birmingham.

Meghan and the children were also reported to have joined him, potentially giving Charles valuable time with Archie and Lilibet after years of limited contact.

The meeting was particularly significant because the children had not been widely reported to have seen their grandfather in person since Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June 2022.

Harry reportedly wants more time in Britain

Even before the Sussexes’ longer-term return was announced, sources close to Harry had suggested he wanted to establish more of a presence in the UK.

Following a recent meeting with Charles, Harry was described as feeling “buoyed,” “very happy” and “really energised.”

A source told The Sunday Times that Harry wanted “more of a foothold” in Britain, more frequent visits and less time spent embroiled in legal disputes.

“He always loves seeing his family,” the source added.

How far that sentiment extends to William remains far less clear.

The brothers’ estrangement continues to appear considerably deeper, and there has been little public indication that a meaningful reconciliation between them is imminent.

With Charles, however, the picture has always been more complicated.

The old footage carries new meaning

Seen more than two decades later, the 2003 polo conversation does not offer a simple answer to whether Harry’s childhood was happy or unhappy.

Instead, it shows why the relationship with Charles is difficult to reduce to either affection or resentment.

Harry has described emotional wounds that he believes were inherited through generations of royal parenting.

He has also remembered moments when Charles failed to provide the physical reassurance he wanted.

At the same time, Harry has spoken about spending hours talking with his father, seeking his advice and appreciating the support Charles gave him following Diana’s death.

The archive footage fits somewhere between those two versions.

There is no dramatic embrace or overt declaration of affection.

There is simply a father paying close attention to his younger son, laughing at his jokes, praising his achievements and repeatedly drawing him into conversation.

For a relationship that has since become one of the most scrutinised in the Royal Family, those small moments now seem unexpectedly significant.
