George Michael Honored With Star-Studded Tribute at the 2026 MTV VMAs

Ten years after George Michael’s death, the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards brought together a new generation of artists and longtime admirers to celebrate his enduring musical legacy.

At Sunday’s ceremony in Los Angeles, Sombr, Teddy Swims and RAYE led a tribute to the late pop icon, joined by Adam Lambert, MEEK, MNEK and Saint Harison. The performance came 10 years after Michael died at the age of 53 and 40 years after the release of his career-defining album Faith.

A New Generation Sings George Michael’s Classics

The tribute was introduced by Orville Peck, who highlighted Michael’s influence as both a performer and songwriter.

Peck recalled how Michael became an international star at just 19, producing hit after hit while using his music and videos to challenge conventions.

He also pointed to the impact of songs such as “I Want Your Sex” and “Freedom! ’90,” noting how Michael used his platform to make bold artistic statements and reclaim his own narrative.

The performance then began with Sombr, whose real name is Shane Michael Boose. The 21-year-old singer opened with “Faith” before moving into “Father Figure.”

RAYE, 28, followed with “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me),” the song originally recorded by Michael and Aretha Franklin. Michael’s vocals were incorporated into the performance, creating a direct connection between the original recording and the new tribute.

Then came Teddy Swims, 34, who took on one of Michael’s most recognizable songs, “Careless Whisper,” as the unmistakable saxophone introduction filled the theater.

Adam Lambert Closed the Tribute

The tribute reached its final section with Adam Lambert, who performed “Freedom! ’90.”

Lambert was eventually joined onstage by MEEK, MNEK and Saint Harison, turning the closing number into a full-stage celebration of Michael’s music and influence.

The lineup brought together artists from different generations and musical backgrounds, reflecting the continuing reach of Michael’s catalog decades after his biggest hits first dominated the charts.

The tribute was also notable because the original announcement had positioned RAYE, Sombr and Teddy Swims as the central performers, with Adam Blackstone serving as musical director.

A Decade After George Michael’s Death

Michael died on December 25, 2016, at age 53. By the time of his death, he had already established one of the most influential careers in modern pop music.

He won four MTV Video Music Awards during his career and received MTV’s Video Vanguard Award in 1989, cementing his place in the history of the ceremony.

The 2026 tribute arrived at an especially significant moment for his legacy. This year marks 40 years of Faith, the album that became a defining chapter in Michael’s solo career.

It also coincides with the long-awaited release of material from his landmark 1988 Faith Tour.

The Faith Tour Is Coming to a New Generation

A live album titled The Faith Tour is scheduled for release on November 6, 2026. The 18-track collection features previously unreleased recordings captured during Michael’s 1988 European tour at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy.

The project will be accompanied by George Michael: The Faith Tour, a feature-length concert film built from footage recorded over two nights using 14 cameras on 35mm film. The movie is scheduled to arrive in U.S. theaters on December 11.

Together, the album and film offer fans a chance to revisit Michael at the height of the Faith era, while the VMAs tribute introduced his music to another generation of performers and viewers.

A decade after his passing, the 2026 VMAs made one thing clear: George Michael’s voice may be gone, but the songs, performances and influence that defined his career continue to find new life onstage.
