THE ROAD HAS ALWAYS BEEN HOME BUT… Scotty McCreery Reveals The Personal Reason His Life As A Touring Country Star Could Soon Look Very Different Behind The Scenes

Scotty McCreery Isn’t Thinking About Retirement — But Family Life Has Him Considering a Major Change to Touring

Former 'American Idol' Winner Scotty McCreery Reveals Major Life News - American Songwriter

After years of spending much of his life on the road, Scotty McCreery is beginning to reconsider just how much touring he wants to do.

The country singer, who rose to fame after winning Season 10 of American Idol, has no intention of retiring at just 32. But as his children grow older and begin reaching milestones he doesn’t want to miss, McCreery says cutting back on the number of shows he plays is becoming increasingly appealing.

For an artist who has performed more than 400 shows over the past couple of years alone, that would mark a noticeable change. Yet McCreery’s reasoning has little to do with losing his enthusiasm for music.

Instead, his priorities at home are evolving.

Scotty McCreery Is Considering Fewer Shows

During an appearance on Taste of Country Nights, McCreery was asked about the future and whether retirement had entered his thoughts.

His answer was emphatic: retirement isn’t something he is considering.

“Yeah, the retirement thing doesn’t ever, I mean I’m only 32, I’ll be 33 here in a month or two, but I don’t, I don’t ponder retirement,” he said.

What McCreery has started thinking about is reducing the amount of time he spends touring.

“I do ponder doing less shows on the road. I think that’ll happen pretty soon.”

It would be a significant adjustment for McCreery, whose career since American Idol has included six studio albums, extensive touring and other television appearances, including Celebrity Family Feud.

But his life away from the stage looks very different today than it did when he first began building his career.

His Children Are Changing the Equation

At the heart of McCreery’s thinking is his family.

His oldest son, Avery, will turn 4 this year and 5 next year. That means school activities, sports and other childhood milestones are quickly approaching — and McCreery doesn’t want touring to keep him away from all of them.

“Just the boys are growing up, you know, Avery will be 4 this year, he’ll be 5 next year,” McCreery explained. “He’s gonna start doing Little League, and he’s gonna start having events at school and I’m not always gonna want to be gone, you know.”

Those are the kinds of moments that can be difficult to accommodate when an artist’s calendar is filled with concerts and travel.

After years of maintaining an intensive touring schedule, McCreery appears increasingly conscious that his children’s milestones won’t wait for an opening in his work calendar.

That doesn’t mean he wants to leave the stage behind. It means he wants to create enough space in his schedule to be present at home as well.

His Love for Performing Hasn’t Changed

McCreery was equally clear that cutting back should not be confused with losing his passion for touring.

“I love what I do, I love the band, I love touring, I love seeing the fans, I love the music,” he said.

That distinction is important.

McCreery isn’t describing the end of his career or even suggesting that he wants to stop performing live. Instead, he seems to be considering a different rhythm — one that allows him to continue doing the work he loves without spending quite as much time away from his family.

“I’ll never, I don’t, retirement, that word never crosses my mind, but slowing down a little bit does.”

More Than a Decade Since American Idol

McCreery has been working steadily since audiences first discovered him on American Idol more than a decade ago.

Winning Season 10 launched a career that has since extended well beyond the competition. He has released six studio albums and built a busy touring schedule that has kept him regularly performing for fans.

The workload has remained substantial. Over the past couple of years alone, McCreery has performed more than 400 shows.

At an earlier stage of his life, that schedule may have been easier to accept. Now, with young children at home, every additional night away carries a different consideration.

Avery will soon have Little League games and school events. As McCreery’s sons continue growing, those commitments — and the family memories surrounding them — will only increase.

Slowing Down Rather Than Stepping Away

McCreery’s comments point toward a new phase of his career rather than an ending.

Music, touring, his band and his relationship with fans remain important to him. But so does being there as his children grow up.

Finding room for both could mean saying yes to fewer concerts and spending more nights at home.

For now, retirement remains firmly off the table. At 32, McCreery sees plenty of music ahead.

What may change is how often he packs his bags to perform it.

After more than a decade of building a career on the road, McCreery appears ready to make sure the next chapter leaves more room for Little League games, school events and the family moments that only happen once.
