14 players wiped out by one deceptively simple question on The 1% Club

A seemingly straightforward question about the alphabet proved surprisingly costly on The 1% Club, with 14 contestants eliminated in a single round.

The challenge looked simple enough. Players were shown a statement about capital letters and mirrors, then given just 30 seconds to work out the answer.

For those who failed, there was at least one consolation: every elimination added another £1,000 to the show’s jackpot.

Hosted by Lee Mack since 2022, The 1% Club takes a different approach to the traditional general-knowledge quiz.

Rather than relying on obscure facts, the ITV show puts 100 contestants through questions designed to test logic, reasoning and common sense.

Each question is linked to a percentage of the public who would be expected to answer it correctly, with contestants given only 30 seconds to make their choice.

As players are eliminated, £1,000 is added to the potential jackpot. The game continues until the remaining contestants face the final challenge, a question that only 1% of the public are expected to answer correctly.

But one episode proved that even a question from much earlier in the game could cause serious trouble.

The question that sent 14 contestants home

The players were faced with a 50% question based on the alphabet.

Lee Mack introduced it with the statement:

A is the first capital letter in the alphabet that looks the same in the mirror.

The contestants then had to answer:

What is the second?

It may have sounded like an easy one, but 14 players failed to give the correct answer, with contestants either choosing the wrong letter or using their pass.

The answer was H.

With 14 contestants eliminated, another £14,000 was added to the jackpot, taking the total prize money to £49,000.

For a question involving nothing more complicated than recognising a capital letter’s appearance in a mirror, it proved a particularly expensive round for the players.

A major change was also coming to The 1% Club

The difficult alphabet question came as ITV prepared a significant change to the show’s usual format.

Instead of being confined to its regular Saturday night slot, The 1% Club was set to become a five-night event, with an episode airing each weekday.

The new format also introduced a rollover feature, allowing prize money to carry from one episode into the next.

That meant the potential jackpot could grow substantially over the course of the week, with up to £500,000 available on the 1% question in the final show if the prize money continued to roll over.

The rollover format was later officially confirmed by ITV as The 1% Club Rollover. The special event retained the show’s familiar logic and common-sense questions while allowing an unclaimed prize pot to carry into the following day’s episode. Contestants who reached the 1% question could also return for the next show.

For viewers, the appeal remained the same: contestants do not need to be quiz experts to succeed. They simply have to stay calm, think carefully and spot the logic hidden inside questions that can look much easier than they actually are.

And for the 14 players who missed the alphabet question, that 30-second countdown proved more than enough to turn a simple letter into an unexpectedly costly mistake.
