The 1% Club is known for questions that can make even confident contestants stop and think. One particularly tricky puzzle challenged players to identify three letters that could be added to three different groups of letters to create three complete words.
The question was:
What same three letters can be added to the end of TI, MAN and CAS to make three words?
You have 30 seconds to work it out.
The puzzle may look straightforward at first, but finding a combination that works with all three sets of letters is where the difficulty lies.
The answer
If you’ve had enough time to think, the three letters are:
TLE
Add them to each group and the words become:
- TI + TLE = TITLE
- MAN + TLE = MANTLE
- CAS + TLE = CASTLE
So the correct combination is T, L and E.
Lee Mack revealed the answer after telling contestants that four people had been eliminated by the question.
How The 1% Club works
Presented by Lee Mack, 56, The 1% Club takes a different approach from traditional quiz shows.
Rather than relying on general knowledge, the ITV programme focuses on logic, reasoning and common sense.
The game begins with 100 players, who face a series of questions and riddles as the competition progresses. Contestants are gradually eliminated until the final stage, where they face a question that only 1% of the public would be expected to answer correctly.
That format means contestants can be caught out by questions that initially appear simple.
A Galapagos dream
During the episode, Lee also spoke to a contestant named Rachel, who was still in the game, and asked what she would do with the money if she won.
Her answer was simple: “I would go to the Galapagos.”
Rachel explained that she would take her friend with her. The pair had wanted to make the trip when they were younger but had been unable to go because they ran out of money.
Lee replied: “Brilliant, Good Luck tonight.”
Another tricky question from the show
The programme’s puzzles have taken several different forms.
In another edition, Lee showed contestants three images that appeared to depict a rope, a rocket and some test tubes.
He asked:
“What common three word phrase is represented here?”
As the contestants tried to work out the connection, Lee joked:
“Looks like a selection of ways my wife has thought to get rid of me.”
Four contestants were then eliminated before Lee revealed the solution.
The images represented the phrase “Not rocket science.”
The combination of deceptively simple clues and pressure from the clock is what makes The 1% Club puzzles particularly challenging. In this case, spotting TLE was enough to turn TI, MAN and CAS into TITLE, MANTLE and CASTLE.
