Seven Days. Two Letters to Avoid. Surely You Can’t Get This Wrong… The 1% Club’s 70% Question Sounded Almost Too Easy — Yet Five Contestants Still Failed To Find The One Day That Fits Both Rules

The 1% Club days-of-the-week riddle left contestants stumped. Could you solve it in 30 seconds?

A deceptively simple question about an unhappy married couple left several contestants struggling on ITV’s The 1% Club.

Hosted by Lee Mack, the quiz show puts logic and common sense to the test rather than relying on general knowledge. Each episode begins with 100 contestants, who are gradually eliminated as the questions become more difficult. The ultimate challenge is designed to be solved by just 1% of people.

A game show host presents a riddle: Fiona and James are married; Fiona is grumpy on days with an "S," James on days with an "M." What day are they both happy?

Riddle: Fiona and James are married. Fiona is grumpy on days with an "S," and James is grumpy on days with an "M." What day are they both happy?

Can you work out which day they are both happy?

In one vintage episode, the contestants faced the show’s 70% question, which revolved around the days of the week.

The puzzle introduced a married couple, Fiona and James. Fiona was said to be grumpy whenever the day contained the letter S, while James was grumpy on any day containing the letter M.

The contestants were then asked:

Fiona and James are married. Fiona is always grumpy on a day that has an S in it. And James is always grumpy on a day that has an M in it. What is the only day of the week they are both happy?

As the players entered their answers, Lee Mack couldn’t resist commenting on the state of their marriage, joking: “Am I the only thinking that Fiona and James won’t last.”

The answer is Friday

Riddle: Fiona and James are grumpy on days with "S" and "M," respectively. What day are they both happy? Answer: Friday.

The solution is Friday.

The reasoning comes from looking at the letters in each day of the week.

Fiona is unhappy on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday because each of those days contains the letter S.

James, meanwhile, is unhappy on Monday because it is the only day containing the letter M.

That leaves Friday as the only day without either an S or an M.

Five contestants got the question wrong and were eliminated.

The 1% Club returns for another series

At the time of the original article, ITV had confirmed that The 1% Club would return for a fifth series, with applications open to prospective contestants until Friday, September 26.

The show has since returned for its fifth series. ITV describes the format as one in which 100 contestants compete for a top prize of up to £100,000, with logic and common sense at the heart of the questions.

The programme was originally created by Dean Nabarro and Andy Auerbach and is produced by Magnum Media for ITV.

The show’s success has also led to further specials and continued series. ITV announced in 2026 that The 1% Club had secured a new three-year deal, extending the programme with additional series and specials.

A new rival from Japan

The article also highlighted a potential new competitor to The 1% Club: 100 Choices, a Japanese game show acquired by Sony Pictures Television.

The format presents contestants with a single question and 100 possible answers. The challenge is designed to be difficult to solve immediately, so contestants have to narrow down the choices by taking part in five physical challenges.

Each successful challenge allows them to eliminate incorrect answers and reduce the number of possibilities.

The show was scheduled to be launched to the international television market at London Screenings 2025.

For The 1% Club, though, the days-of-the-week puzzle remains a classic example of how a question that looks incredibly straightforward can still catch contestants out under pressure.

And if you missed it, the answer is Friday.
