More than five decades after she first appeared as Mary Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie, Melissa Sue Anderson is marking another milestone. The former child star turned 64 on Saturday, September 26, 2026 — a remarkable journey from one of television’s most recognizable young actresses to a much more private life away from Hollywood.
Born in Berkeley, California, in 1962, Anderson became a household name playing the eldest daughter of Charles and Caroline Ingalls. Although she has largely stepped away from acting in recent years, her portrayal of Mary remains one of the defining roles of her career.
The Role That Made Her Famous
Anderson was only 11 when she joined Little House on the Prairie in 1974, appearing alongside Michael Landon, Karen Grassle and Melissa Gilbert.
Based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books, the beloved family drama followed the Ingalls family as they built a life on the American frontier. Anderson played Mary, the oldest Ingalls daughter, whose storyline became increasingly dramatic as the series progressed.
One of the character’s most significant turning points came at the end of the fourth season, when Mary lost her sight. The storyline gave Anderson some of the series’ most challenging and memorable material.
The show itself continued through 1983, while Anderson remained with the series for seven years before leaving in 1981.
An Emmy-Nominated Performance
Anderson’s work on Little House on the Prairie earned her a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 1978.
She was the only member of the Little House cast to receive an acting Emmy nomination for the series, marking an important achievement for the young performer.
Mary’s story continued to take darker turns, including the loss of a baby in a fire, before Anderson eventually decided to leave the show in 1981.
She Was Acting Before Little House
Her career had actually begun several years earlier.
After a dance teacher encouraged Anderson’s family to find her an agent, she began appearing in television commercials before moving into acting roles. She made guest appearances on programs including The Brady Bunch, where she played a girl who shared a kiss with Bobby Brady, as well as the television version of Shaft.

Leaving Little House on the Prairie did not mean the end of Anderson’s acting career.
She went on to appear in a variety of film and television projects, including the horror movie Happy Birthday to Me, Murder, She Wrote and The Equalizer. She also earned a Daytime Emmy for her performance in the ABC Afterschool Special Which Mother Is Mine?
Those roles helped establish that her career extended well beyond the character that had made her famous.
Choosing Family Over Hollywood
Anderson eventually began stepping back from acting as she focused more heavily on her family.
She married television writer and producer Michael Sloan in 1990. Their daughter, Piper, was born in 1991, followed by their son, Griffin, in 1996.
The family later moved to Canada, and Anderson became a Canadian citizen in 2007. She has spoken about making motherhood her priority and choosing to work only occasionally as her children grew up.
Michael Sloan died in August 2025, after 35 years of marriage to Anderson.
Looking Back On Her Little House Years
Anderson revisited her childhood-stardom years in her 2010 memoir, The Way I See It: A Look Back at My Life on Little House.
The book reflects on her time working on the long-running series as well as her experiences before and after becoming Mary Ingalls. It offers a personal look at the career that began when she was still a child.
Although Anderson has maintained a relatively private life, she has occasionally returned to the public eye. In June 2024, she attended the Little House on the Prairie photocall at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival in Monaco.
A Long-Awaited Reunion With Melissa Gilbert
One of the most notable recent moments came in December 2025, when Anderson reunited with Melissa Gilbert, who played her onscreen sister Laura Ingalls.
The two actresses had reportedly remained distant for decades after their years working together on the series. That changed when Anderson appeared backstage at Gilbert’s Off-Broadway production Pen Pals.
Gilbert shared a photograph of the pair and described their renewed connection as a time of long conversations, reminiscing, laughter and tears. She said she was happy to have Anderson back in her life and described their shared history as something only the two “Ingalls girls” could truly understand.
