PART 3

The knock at the front door echoed through the mansion.
No one moved.
Ryan’s confidence vanished first.
Vanessa recovered almost instantly.
“Don’t answer it,” she ordered.
I smiled.
“It’s a little late for that.”
The doors swung open.
Two detectives.
Three uniformed officers.
My father’s attorney.
And the chairman of Carter Industries.
No one had expected them to arrive together.
The room turned deathly quiet.
Ryan leaned toward his mother.
“You called the police?”
Vanessa whispered back, “Of course not.”
One detective stepped forward.
“Mr. Daniel Carter?”
My father slowly stood.
“I’m here.”
“We’re investigating allegations of financial fraud, coercion, and elder abuse.”
Vanessa laughed.
“This is ridiculous. My husband isn’t capable of making decisions.”
I looked at her.
“Interesting.”
“You’ve spent two years claiming he was perfectly competent every time he signed your paperwork.”
Her smile disappeared.
The chairman quietly placed a folder on the table.
“We reviewed the evidence Ms. Carter submitted this morning.”
He looked directly at Ryan.
“Every transfer you approved is being suspended.”
Ryan’s face went pale.
“You can’t do that!”
“We already did.”
Vanessa slammed both hands onto the dining table.
“Those files are fake!”
I reached into my briefcase.
“I wondered if you’d say that.”
I removed one final envelope.
Still sealed.
Still untouched.
“The originals.”
Vanessa stopped breathing.
My father’s attorney broke the seal in front of everyone.
Inside were the authentic trust documents…
Signed years before the accident.
The attorney looked around the room.
“Mr. Carter never transferred control of his estate.”
“He transferred it to his daughter.”
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Ryan slowly turned toward his mother.
“You told me she had nothing.”
Vanessa couldn’t answer.
Because she had never seen these documents before.
She thought she had destroyed every copy.
She was wrong.
My father took a slow step forward.
Then another.
Finally, he faced the woman he once trusted.
“You didn’t steal my company first.”
He looked straight into Vanessa’s eyes.
“You stole my home.”
“You stole my dignity.”
“You almost stole my daughter.”
Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“I did everything for us.”
“No,” I answered.
“You did everything for yourself.”
Just then, one of the detectives received a call through his earpiece.
His expression changed immediately.
He turned toward Vanessa.
“We’ve located the accountant who handled your offshore accounts.”
Ryan’s knees nearly gave out.
The detective continued.
“He’s agreed to testify.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
For the first time…
She realized this wasn’t a family argument anymore.
It was a criminal case.
An officer stepped forward with a pair of handcuffs.
“Mrs. Carter…”
“You’re under arrest.”
Vanessa suddenly spun toward the grand staircase.
She ran.
Every officer chased after her.
Ryan instinctively bolted toward the back entrance.
He never made it.
The front doors burst open again.
More officers flooded inside.
And waiting behind them…
…was someone none of us expected to see.
Someone Vanessa believed had been dead for two years.
