Before appearing on national television, the Alabama teenager had little professional music experience and was better known for playing high school basketball. His first major public singing performance came during his Blind Audition on September 21, 2026.
From his small-town upbringing to his unexpected connection with coach Riley Green, here are five things to know about Joe Henley and his journey on The Voice.

1. He Grew Up In A Small Alabama Community
Henley comes from Grand Bay, a small community in southern Alabama. His family played an important role in introducing him to music, as his grandparents ran a small ministry where he became familiar with gospel hymns and singing in front of others.
As he grew older, he developed a strong interest in traditional country music. Some of his favorite artists include Travis Tritt, Keith Whitley, Don Williams and George Strait. Their storytelling and rich vocals helped shape his musical taste, although he had not originally planned to pursue singing professionally.
That musical background became clear when Henley auditioned for The Voice with Travis Tritt’s Any More. His deep voice caught the attention of Kelly Clarkson and Riley Green, who both turned their chairs.

2. Basketball Was His Main Focus Before The Voice
Before becoming a familiar face to country music fans, Henley spent much of his time playing basketball at Cottage Hill Christian Academy in Mobile, Alabama.
He graduated in 2026 and wore jersey number 20 during his junior and senior seasons. At 6 feet 5 inches tall, he played shooting guard and small forward, showing a very different side of himself from the country singer viewers now see on television.
One of his notable performances came in November 2024, when he scored 21 points against McGill-Toolen High School. His final high school basketball games took place in February 2026, only a few months before his television debut.
The transition from competitive basketball to a national singing competition has made Henley’s story especially surprising.
3. He Chose Riley Green Over Kelly Clarkson
Henley’s Blind Audition became memorable not only because of his voice but also because of his connection with Riley Green.
While performing Any More, Henley repeatedly looked toward Green. Clarkson noticed and even walked onto the stage wearing a cowboy hat in an attempt to get his attention.
Both coaches wanted him on their teams. Green eventually asked Henley to name his favorite song by him, and the teenager chose My Way. Green then picked up an acoustic guitar and joined him for an impromptu duet.
That moment helped strengthen their connection, and Henley ultimately chose Team Riley. Green welcomed him with customized Team Riley Carhartt bib overalls, while Clarkson jokingly reacted to how much attention her fellow coach had received.
For Henley, joining Green’s team meant learning from a country artist whose traditional sound matched his own musical interests.
4. He Had To Learn How To Perform On Stage
Henley’s limited performance experience became more noticeable during the Battle Rounds. Green paired him with Kenna Elpers, a 23-year-old country singer from Indiana who already had experience performing in the independent music scene.
The two artists performed Don’t Mind If I Do, Green’s duet with Ella Langley. During rehearsals, Henley struggled with some basic stage skills, including handling a microphone stand, moving around the stage and following technical instructions.
Battle advisor Carly Pearce affectionately compared him to a puppy with oversized paws. Green also joked about his awkwardness with the equipment, while Elpers helped him become more comfortable with the unfamiliar parts of performing.
Despite those challenges, Henley delivered a strong vocal performance. Clarkson praised Elpers’s delicate vibrato but told Henley that his voice had the Randy Travis effect. Adam Levine and Queen Latifah also recognized his distinctive sound.
Green ultimately chose Henley as the Battle winner, ending Elpers’s journey on the show and sending him into Cut Week.

5. His Performances Are Attracting Millions Of Views
Henley’s popularity has started to grow beyond the weekly episodes of The Voice. By late October, his Blind Audition had reached around 1.8 million views on YouTube and 3.1 million views on Facebook. His Battle performance had also passed half a million YouTube views.
He has also started sharing more music with fans outside the competition. On October 14, he posted an acoustic home performance of Vince Gill’s If I Didn’t Have You in My World on Instagram. Two days later, he appeared in a live video session hosted by Talented Universe.
These videos give viewers another chance to hear his country sound while watching him gain experience as a performer.

Can Joe Henley Advance To The Live Shows?
Henley’s next major challenge is making it through Cut Week, one of the most competitive stages of Season 30. Each coach begins the round with seven artists and must select two to advance directly to the Live Shows. The remaining five compete for another team spot, while America gets to vote for an additional wildcard artist.
Team Riley has several strong performers, so Henley’s success in the Blind Auditions and Battles does not guarantee his place in the next round.
His traditional country sound and Green’s mentorship could give him an advantage, but he will also need to continue improving his stage confidence and performance skills.
Clarkson has already suggested that Henley has the potential to win the season. Whether he can turn that prediction into reality remains to be seen. Still, his journey from a small Alabama community and a high school basketball court to the national stage has already introduced him to a much wider audience.
