Harriet Sperling Opens Up About the Challenges of Raising Daughter Georgina Alone Before Finding Love with Peter Phillips
Harriet Sperling has spoken candidly about the difficult experience of raising her daughter, Georgina, as a single mother, describing it as a painful chapter that nevertheless helped shape the person she is today.
Now married to Peter Phillips, Princess Anne’s only son, Harriet reflected on the challenges she faced before their relationship began and the support that helped her through those years. She also shared how proud she is of Georgina and how naturally the teenager has adapted to becoming part of a blended royal family.

Harriet’s life changed considerably after meeting Peter. The couple began dating in 2024 and married in June 2026, bringing her into the public eye alongside her teenage daughter. Their wedding was attended by senior members of the Royal Family, including King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William and Princess Catherine.
For Georgina, the transition into such an unusual family environment could have been a significant adjustment. However, Harriet told HELLO! that her daughter had handled the changes with remarkable composure.
“She’s very serene and emotionally very mature. She takes it all in her stride,” she said.
Harriet Reflects on the Reality of Single Motherhood
In her interview, Harriet looked back on the years she spent raising Georgina on her own, acknowledging that the experience was not always easy.
“Although at times it was a painful experience, I did have the support of people who loved us,” she explained.
Rather than allowing those difficult moments to define her, Harriet said she learned to recognise the positive things that can emerge from periods of hardship.
“Any time in life when you’re under pressure or facing adversity, something good always comes from it. Lean in; don’t be scared.”

Her Christian faith also played an important role in helping her navigate the challenges of motherhood.
“Everyone has challenges in life that are dressed up differently,” she reflected.
Harriet acknowledged that raising a child alone had been her own particular challenge, but said the experience had ultimately brought her and Georgina closer.
“Maybe this has been my challenge – the experience of bringing up a child on my own. I’ve been able to see the good things that have come out of it. Good things come to those who wait, and meeting Peter was a part of the journey.”
She added that she was enormously proud of the young woman her daughter had become, describing their relationship as very close.
A New Family with Peter Phillips

Through her marriage to Peter, Georgina has gained two stepsisters: Savannah, 15, and Isla, 14. Both girls are Peter’s daughters from his previous marriage to Autumn Kelly.
The three teenagers have already shown how they are building a close relationship, with all of them playing an important part in Harriet and Peter’s wedding celebrations.
Savannah, Isla and Georgina were chosen as bridesmaids for the ceremony at All Saints Church in the picturesque Cotswolds.
Their involvement made the wedding a family occasion as much as a royal gathering. Dressed in matching Emilia Wickstead outfits and flower crowns, the girls welcomed Harriet as she arrived at the church. They helped arrange her veil before accompanying her inside for the ceremony.
The moment offered a glimpse of the bond developing between the three girls as their families came together.
Georgina Makes Her First Public Appearance with the Royal Family

Georgina also stepped into the royal spotlight for the first time during the Easter celebrations, attending the traditional Easter Sunday service at St George’s Chapel alongside members of the Royal Family.
Her appearance attracted attention, particularly as it marked an important moment in her introduction to her mother’s new family.
Speaking to HELLO!, body language expert Inbaal Honigman suggested that the royal family appeared keen to make the teenager feel comfortable and included.
“Their casual, friendly smiles and moves show them to be feeling at ease, and wanting Georgina herself to feel at ease,” she explained. “They all communicate with her gently and warmly, keen to welcome her to the fold.”
Georgina attended the service wearing a blue top and brown skirt, walking towards the chapel with her new stepsisters, Isla and Savannah. Harriet and Peter followed behind the girls.
Outside the chapel, Georgina was seen standing between her mother and Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence. Princess Anne also spent time speaking with Harriet, who was then preparing to become her daughter-in-law.
The occasion offered an early glimpse of Georgina becoming more familiar with the royal family and her new place within it.
A Difficult Past and a New Chapter
For Harriet, the journey to marrying Peter has involved far more than a change in relationship status. Her experiences as a single mother, the support she received from loved ones and the strength she drew from her faith have all played a part in shaping her family life.
She has also been clear about the importance of recognising the positive lessons that can come from adversity. Although raising Georgina alone was sometimes painful, Harriet now looks back on that period as an important part of the journey that eventually brought Peter into her life.
With Georgina, Savannah and Isla sharing such a prominent role in their wedding, the couple’s celebration also marked the beginning of a new chapter for their blended family.
