Mike Tindall Reveals What First Attracted Him To Zara — And Their First Date Took A Surprisingly Boozy Turn
Fifteen years after marrying Zara Tindall, Mike has shared more details about the unexpected beginning of their relationship, including the chance encounter that brought them together and the memorable first date that followed.
The former England rugby captain and Princess Anne’s daughter might once have seemed like an unlikely pairing. Yet their down-to-earth personalities, playful sense of humour and obvious affection for one another have helped make them one of the most popular couples connected to the Royal Family.
Their story began in Sydney in 2003, during the Rugby World Cup. But according to Mike, the circumstances surrounding their first meeting were far from romantic.
The Rugby Setback That Brought Them Together
Mike was in Australia representing England when he was dropped from the squad for the World Cup semi-final. Understandably frustrated, he decided to go for a beer with another player who had also been left out and a friend who was visiting Sydney.
That evening, the group introduced him to Zara, who was in Australia watching the tournament.
Recalling the encounter during his 2022 appearance on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, Mike explained that the people he was drinking with had met Zara previously and brought them together.
The introduction eventually changed the course of his personal life.
When actor Owen Warner pointed out that Mike might never have met Zara if he hadn’t been dropped from the semi-final, Mike joked that it had been the “best decision” of former England coach Clive Woodward’s life.
Owen agreed, adding that Woodward deserved thanks for dropping him.
What began as a disappointing moment in Mike’s rugby career had unexpectedly opened the door to a relationship that would last for years.
Their First Date Wasn’t Quite What You’d Expect
Mike has also shared an amusing detail about the couple’s first proper date.
Rather than an elaborate romantic evening, the pair went out for lunch locally. However, the meal turned into a much longer and more alcohol-filled occasion than they had initially planned.
Mike recalled that they eventually discovered they both enjoyed drinking and having a good time.
Describing it as a good start, he suggested that their shared sense of fun helped set the tone for their relationship.
The anecdote offers a glimpse into the relaxed dynamic that has remained a feature of their marriage. Their public appearances are often marked by laughter and playful exchanges rather than formality.
Fifteen Years Of Marriage
Mike and Zara married on 30 July 2011 at Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh, three months after Zara’s cousin, Prince William, married Kate Middleton.
The couple now share three children: Mia, Lena and Lucas.
Although their backgrounds initially appeared very different, their relationship has developed into a partnership built around family life, sport and a shared sense of humour.
Mike has previously spoken warmly about the welcome he received from Zara’s relatives after joining the family through marriage. He credited the late Queen Elizabeth II in particular with making him and his family feel included.
He has also described the Royal Family as kind and welcoming, saying he has always felt part of it.
Zara’s One Particular Concern About Mike
Their relationship isn’t without its teasing moments.
Mike previously revealed that Zara had warned him to be himself while appearing on I’m a Celebrity, but she also had a specific concern about how he might come across on television.
According to Mike, his wife worries about how loudly he eats and breathes while eating.
He joked that his breathing was a by-product of the damage his nose had sustained over the years.
The confession offered another glimpse of the couple’s humour and the everyday details that can become running jokes in a long-term relationship.
What Does Mike Call His Mother-In-Law?
Mike has also revealed the name he uses for Princess Anne in private — and it is surprisingly informal.
During a 2024 appearance on Good Morning Britain, he discussed the Royal Family’s appearance on his podcast, The Good, The Bad & The Rugby.
He praised the royals for supporting the sport and helping demonstrate how rugby brings people together across different backgrounds.
When presenter Susanna Reid asked what he called his mother-in-law, Mike gave a simple answer: “Mam.”
The response reflected the comfortable relationship he has developed with Zara’s family over the years.
A Chance Meeting That Changed Everything
From an unexpected introduction in Sydney to a lunch date that became a boozy afternoon, Mike and Zara’s early romance did not follow a conventional royal love-story script.
Their relationship began while Mike was dealing with disappointment on the rugby field, but that setback ultimately led to a meeting that would shape the rest of his life.
Today, the couple are parents of three and have celebrated 15 years of marriage.
Their story is a reminder that significant relationships can begin in the most unexpected circumstances — sometimes when a plan goes wrong and a simple drink with friends turns into something much more meaningful.
