The 1% Club Viewers Baffled as ‘Easy’ Question Eliminates 23 Contestants in One Round
An apparently straightforward question on The 1% Club proved much trickier than expected, knocking 23 contestants out of the competition in a single round. Even viewers at home were left questioning how such a seemingly simple challenge could catch so many players off guard.
The incident occurred during the Saturday, May 24, 2025, edition of the ITV quiz show, hosted by comedian Lee Mack. The programme brought together 100 contestants, all hoping to work their way through a series of increasingly challenging logic puzzles for the chance to win a substantial cash prize.

Unlike traditional quiz shows, The 1% Club bases its questions on tests given to members of the public. The percentage of people who answer each question correctly determines its difficulty, with the final challenge reserved for one that only 1% of the population can solve.
However, it was a question from the 70% round that caused an unexpected wave of eliminations.
The Question That Caught 23 Contestants Out
The challenge presented to the players read:
“John writes with his right hand and the last word he’d write if he was writing this sentence would be be. If Keith writes with his left hand, what would be the last word he would write in the sentence above?”
Despite being classified as a 70% question, the puzzle proved surprisingly difficult for a number of contestants.
After seeing the results, Lee Mack reacted with disbelief, saying: “Wow, we lost 23 on that one, let’s have a look at the answer.”
The correct answer was “be”. The trick was that the question focused on the wording of the sentence, not the hand used to write it. Whether Keith writes with his left hand or John uses his right, the final word in the sentence remains unchanged.
Lee was clearly surprised by the number of people who had fallen for the question, adding: “We lost 23, that is a lot of people.”

Contestant Reveals He Has Taught Brad Pitt’s Children
The same episode also featured an unexpected celebrity revelation from contestant Neil, who was eliminated during the 40% round.
Before leaving the competition, Neil spoke about his unusual profession, revealing that he was a professional archer and had been teaching the sport for approximately 24 years.
Curious about the level of his work, Lee asked whether he taught at an Olympic level. Neil explained that his students ranged from complete beginners to well-known personalities.
He then dropped a surprising name, revealing: “I’ve taught Brad Pitt’s kids.”
Naturally intrigued, Lee wanted to know what the Hollywood star was like. But Neil’s response was far from the usual glowing celebrity anecdote.

Brad Pitt Described as ‘Very Tall’ and ‘A Bit Smelly’
When Lee asked about his experience with Brad Pitt, Neil admitted that the actor had been “very tall” but also “a bit smelly” when he encountered him.
The unexpected comment prompted an amused reaction from the host.
“Wow, most people end those anecdotes with, ‘What a lovely man,’” Lee joked.
He then repeated Neil’s description, asking whether Pitt had really been “quite tall and smelly” at the time.
Neil’s remark was not the first occasion on which someone had spoken publicly about the actor’s personal hygiene.
Last year, Canadian actor Jason Priestley recalled living with Brad Pitt during an appearance on Live With Kelly and Mark. According to Entertainment Weekly, Priestley described a game he and his roommates used to play to see who could go the longest without showering.

Reflecting on the experience, he admitted: “I think about it now, I’m like ‘Dude, how disgusting! What were you thinking?’”
Priestley said Pitt was the one who could go the longest without showering and often won the competition. He also suggested that the actor no longer followed those habits, explaining that, back then, Pitt could go a long time without showering.
Where to Watch The 1% Club
Hosted by Lee Mack, The 1% Club continues to challenge contestants with puzzles designed to test their logic and reasoning rather than conventional general knowledge.
