The 1% Club Viewers Spot Potentially “Glaring Error” In Quiz Question As Fans Insist There Was Another Correct Answer

A seemingly straightforward question on The 1% Club has sparked an unexpected debate, with viewers questioning whether the show’s official answer was actually the only one that should have counted.

The confusion erupted after contestants were asked to solve a birthday balloon puzzle involving a boy named Amrit and his grandfather. While the programme accepted one particular answer, several viewers quickly spotted what they believed was a perfectly valid alternative.

And they weren’t convinced the distinction was fair.

Hosted by Lee Mack, the ITV quiz show challenges 100 contestants with questions designed to test logic, reasoning and common sense. The difficulty gradually increases, moving from questions that 100% of the population could supposedly answer down to the notoriously difficult 1% question.

The ultimate prize? A life-changing £100,000.

But it was a question from the 30% round that got viewers talking this time.

THE BIRTHDAY BALLOON QUESTION THAT DIVIDED VIEWERS

The puzzle read:

“Amrit and his grandad share the same birthday. Their birthday balloons arrive muddled up. Amrit’s grandad is three times older than him. How old is Amrit?”

The programme’s accepted answer was 26, making his grandfather 78.

On the surface, the numbers seemed to add up. However, some viewers noticed a detail in the question’s visual presentation that they believed opened the door to another solution.

One viewer took to the show’s Instagram page to explain why their partner believed the answer should also have been accepted.

“My other half is adamant that his answer of 29 is also right.”

They continued:

“There’s no string on those balloons, therefore you could turn the 6 upside down. 3×29=87 What do you reckon? Was he still in, or was he out of the game?”

The argument quickly gained support from other quiz fans, who questioned why the alternative interpretation had seemingly been overlooked.

Another viewer wrote:

“Could’ve been 2 answers which is odd… flip the 6 round to a 9 and could’ve been 29 and 87.”

A third person was equally unconvinced by the original solution:

“It could also be 29 ie one third of 87? If I had put that in the studio I would expect to Appeal!!! Previous questions have used balloons to switch 6 and 9s!!!”

Others focused on what they considered a simple way to prevent the confusion in the first place.

One commenter suggested:

“Hmm they should’ve drawn strings on the bottoms of the balloons if they wanted to avoid people turning the 6 upside down for 29 and 87.”

The central complaint was clear: if the balloons had no strings to indicate their correct orientation, why couldn’t contestants interpret the six as a nine?

LEE MACK GIVES UPDATE ON THE FUTURE OF NOT GOING OUT

The debate comes as Lee Mack has also been discussing what lies ahead for his long-running sitcom, Not Going Out.

Speaking to virginradio.co.uk and other press, the comedian was asked about the possibility of another series.

“I’m not sure about another 100, but discussions are ongoing now. We will be back with you shortly with some more information one way or the other, we’re talking about that.”

Despite the uncertainty, Mack made no secret of his enthusiasm for continuing.

“I’d love to do more, I love doing it, it’s great fun. I love the cast: most of them are here!”

However, he acknowledged that the final decision isn’t entirely in his hands.

“It’s not always my decision for these things. I just wait for someone to say ‘There’s a bag of money, get on with it’,” he joked.

WHY LEE MACK BELIEVES BRITISH SITCOMS MUST CONTINUE

Mack also spoke passionately about his affection for British comedy, explaining why the country’s sitcom tradition remains particularly important to him.

While acknowledging the popularity of American comedies, he revealed that British productions have always been his personal favourites.

“I know a lot of people rave about American comedies, but almost all British sitcoms are my personal favourites.”

He recalled growing up watching classics including Dad’s Army, Rising Damp and The Young Ones, describing the latter as “unbelievably revolutionary at the time”.

For Mack, keeping that tradition alive matters.

“I just think it’s important to keep it going. I think it’s an importantly almost uniquely British thing. I know the Americans do it, but I think the way we do it is very uniquely British.”
