The 1% Club: 11 Contestants Fall for a Sneaky Word Question Before a £97,000 Final Stumper

A deceptively simple word question proved too much for 11 contestants on The 1% Club, but the biggest shock came at the end of the episode, when all five finalists failed to solve the final puzzle and the entire £97,000 prize pot went unclaimed.

Hosted by Lee Mack, the ITV quiz show is designed to test logic, reasoning and common sense rather than general knowledge. That format has helped make the programme a hit since it launched in 2022, with viewers also able to play along from home.

The word question that caught out 11 players

One of the episode’s biggest early shocks came when 11 contestants were eliminated by a question that appeared straightforward at first glance.

Players were given 30 seconds to answer:

Which word in this question would come first alphabetically in a standard dictionary?

The wording was designed to make contestants think carefully about the question itself. After the clock ran out, Lee Mack revealed that 11 players had failed to give the correct answer.

The answer was simply “a.”

That small detail was enough to send a sizeable group of contestants out of the game.

Each player begins with a £1,000 stake, and those who survive the increasingly difficult rounds can reach the final 1% question, where they have the opportunity to compete for a share of the prize pot.

Then came the £97,000 final question

The episode became even more difficult in its final stage.

Five contestants made it through to the last question, with £97,000 in the prize pot. They were then given 30 seconds to solve a word puzzle that required them to spot a connection between several capitalised words.

Lee Mack asked:

What new word links the capitalised words below?

The sentence read:

“My SON TED ate raw FOOD and got SICK, then went to BED with me by his SIDE.”

The five finalists had half a minute to find a single word that could connect all six capitalised words.

But when the time ran out, none of them had found the solution.

The answer was hiding in plain sight

The correct answer was SEA.

The word can be placed at the beginning of each of the six capitalised words to create a new word:

• SEA + SON = SEASON
• SEA + TED = SEATED
• SEA + FOOD = SEAFOOD
• SEA + SICK = SEASICK
• SEA + BED = SEABED
• SEA + SIDE = SEASIDE

The same word therefore works with every capitalised word in the sentence.

The finalists had each come up with different possibilities during the 30-second countdown. One contestant admitted that he had not written anything down, while other guesses included “well” and “new.” None matched the answer Lee was looking for.

The result meant that every finalist missed the final question and the £97,000 prize pot went unclaimed.

Lee was left visibly surprised by the outcome after the contestants had managed to make it through the earlier rounds, only to be stopped by the final word puzzle.

A difficult night for the contestants

The combination of the early alphabetical question and the final word puzzle made for a particularly challenging episode.

The 1% Club deliberately builds its questions around logic and lateral thinking, meaning a question can look easy while requiring contestants to notice a small detail in the wording. The episode’s final puzzle was a clear example: the six capitalised words appeared unrelated until the same three-letter word was placed in front of each one.

The answer, SEA, produces six familiar words: SEASON, SEATED, SEAFOOD, SEASICK, SEABED and SEASIDE.

For the five contestants who reached the final, however, the connection remained elusive within the 30-second limit.

With no correct answer, nobody walked away with money from the £97,000 prize pot.
