Victoria Coren Mitchell Called Them “INTELLECTUAL GIANTS”… Then Delivered The Insult Nobody Expected. The Only Connect contestants thought they were about to receive a flattering introduction. They had made it to the third-place play-off — an achievement Victoria described as a “towering achievement” that made them “intellectual giants.” Then came the twist. “They’re just idiots compared to the people in the final.” The studio reaction was awkward enough, but the real backlash came afterwards, when viewers took to social media to question whether Victoria had pushed her famously dry humour too far. One viewer called the comment “a bit rude,” while another said the contestants’ smiles hardly looked genuine and suggested she should apologise. Was Victoria simply playing up the show’s brutal humour — or did this particular joke cross the line?

VICTORIA COREN MITCHELL STUNS ONLY CONNECT CONTESTANTS WITH BRUTAL ‘IDIOTS’ JIBE — VIEWERS DEMAND AN APOLOGY

Victoria Coren Mitchell left a few Only Connect contestants facing an awkward moment after branding them “idiots” in a brutally cheeky opening to the BBC quiz.

The presenter was hosting the show’s third-place play-off, with Cat Cows taking on rival team Crunchers, when she delivered a joke that immediately divided viewers.

Only Connect, which first launched in 2008, sees teams of three battle through notoriously difficult rounds by finding links between seemingly unrelated clues.

But before the serious quizzing began, Victoria turned her attention to the contestants — and delivered a particularly pointed introduction.

‘THEY’RE JUST IDIOTS’

"Only Connect" contestants Iona Twaddell, Max McGenity, and Molly Glaze, team name "Cat Cows".

Victoria joked that most viewers struggle to understand the programme at all.

“98% of viewers don’t even understand the questions on this show, they’re not even sure we’re broadcasting in English,” she said.

“Some people are only watching because their cat is sitting on the remote.

“So to finish third in the actual competition is a towering achievement and the people here are intellectual giants.

“They’re just idiots compared to the people in the final.”

She then continued: “And those idiots are…”

Some contestants appeared to smile at the remark, while others looked considerably more serious as the joke landed.

VIEWERS WERE NOT AMUSED

While the contestants played along, some Only Connect viewers were far less impressed.

One viewer wrote on X: “Bit rude of Victoria Coren Mitchell to call them idiots.”

Another added: “Can’t imagine those smiles were real. She should apologise! #OnlyConnect.”

A third joked: “Not many quizzers would laugh at being called idiots. #OnlyConnect.”

The comments added another layer to a programme already known for Victoria’s dry humour and deliberately awkward jokes.

ANOTHER CONTROVERSIAL MOMENT

The “idiots” remark is not the first time Victoria’s Only Connect humour has sparked attention.

Last month, viewers noticed a strange continuity issue during an episode after Victoria appeared with bright red polished nails while reading an AI-generated opening joke.

In the following clip, filmed in what appeared to be the same outfit, her nails were suddenly bare.

Victoria later explained on X that she had been forced to record an entirely different opening on another day after making a joke about Strictly that had “spooked the powers that be.”

She later suggested the wardrobe mishap viewers had spotted was likely connected to that re-recording.

For now, though, it was one throwaway word — “idiots” — that had Only Connect viewers talking all over again.
