A four-letter word puzzle that looked almost ridiculously easy turned into a surprisingly difficult challenge on The 1% Club. Despite having just a handful of letters to work with and only 30 seconds to find the solution, several contestants struggled to spot the missing word. In fact, six players got it wrong, proving that sometimes the simplest questions can be the most frustrating.
The popular ITV quiz show, hosted by comedian and actor Lee Mack since it first launched in April 2022, has built a loyal audience thanks to its unusual approach to testing contestants. Rather than relying on traditional general knowledge questions, the programme challenges players with puzzles based on logic, observation, patterns and everyday common sense.
And one particular question from a repeated episode of series two had even the remaining contestants scratching their heads.
The Tricky 20% Question That Stumped Six Contestants
During the episode, Lee presented the players with a seemingly straightforward challenge:
“Which four-letter word is missing from this list?”
The sequence displayed five words: “spot”, “opts”, “pots”, “stop” and “tops”. Contestants were required to identify another four-letter word that could be created using exactly the same letters: S, P, O and T.
At first glance, it appeared to be the kind of question that should take only a few seconds. After all, the letters were already provided, and players simply needed to rearrange them to discover the missing word.
However, the challenge was more difficult than it looked. With the studio countdown ticking away, contestants had to think quickly while searching for a combination they might have overlooked.
The question was classified as a 20% challenge, meaning it was designed to be answered correctly by only a relatively small proportion of the population. And the results showed just how effective it was at catching people out.
Six Players Failed To Find The Missing Word

Despite the apparently simple instructions, six of the remaining contestants failed to provide the correct answer.
The pressure of having only 30 seconds to solve the puzzle made things even more difficult. Players had to consider the different possible arrangements of the four letters, while avoiding words they had already seen in the sequence.
It is precisely this kind of challenge that makes The 1% Club so entertaining. Contestants can sometimes find themselves struggling with a question that viewers watching comfortably at home believe they could solve in seconds.
But when the clock is ticking and the possibility of losing a place in the competition is hanging over them, even an easy-looking puzzle can become surprisingly stressful.
Lee Mack Finally Reveals The Answer
After the contestants had been given their chance to work out the missing word, Lee revealed the solution.
The correct answer was “POST” — another four-letter word that can be formed using S, P, O and T.
Although the answer seems obvious once it has been revealed, six contestants had already been caught out by the challenge. The puzzle demonstrated how easily people can overlook a familiar word when they are concentrating too hard on finding a complicated solution.
For viewers playing along at home, it was also an opportunity to test their own ability to recognise patterns and rearrange letters under pressure.
Why The 1% Club Questions Are So Difficult
Since launching in April 2022, The 1% Club has become a distinctive addition to ITV’s quiz-show line-up. Hosted by Lee Mack, the programme brings together 100 contestants who must answer a series of questions that become progressively more challenging.
Unlike conventional quiz programmes, contestants are not expected to memorise historical dates, sporting records or obscure facts. Instead, the questions focus on how people think, how they interpret information and whether they can recognise patterns that might not be immediately obvious.
Players begin with questions that around 90% of the population should be able to answer correctly. As the competition progresses, the challenges become increasingly difficult, eventually reaching the questions designed for just 1% of people.
Contestants are typically given 30 seconds to work out each answer, meaning quick thinking is essential. One small mistake can make the difference between staying in the competition and being eliminated.
This is also why viewers enjoy participating from home. They can pause, think through the clues and compare their answers with the contestants before Lee reveals the solution.
Only One Contestant Reached The Final 1% Question
The difficult word puzzle was not the only memorable moment from the episode. By the time the competition reached its conclusion, just one contestant had managed to make it through to the final 1% question.
The stakes were particularly high for Brett, who already had £1,000 secured and had the opportunity to leave with an additional £10,000 rather than risk attempting the final challenge.
However, with the possibility of winning the full £96,000 jackpot, he decided to take his chances.
When the final question appeared, Brett looked visibly stunned by its difficulty. He struggled throughout the 30-second countdown, eventually admitting that he simply could not see the answer.
He explained that he had written down “last”, but unfortunately, that was not the word Lee was looking for. The correct answer was “only”, meaning Brett missed out on the larger jackpot.
Could You Have Beaten The Contestants?
The four-letter word challenge is a perfect example of how The 1% Club manages to turn ordinary words into surprisingly difficult puzzles.
With just four letters and a list of familiar combinations, the answer was hiding in plain sight. Yet six contestants failed to identify it before time ran out.
So, how would you have performed under the same pressure? Could you have spotted “POST” immediately, or would the ticking countdown have thrown you off just like the players in the studio?
One thing is certain: the next time an apparently easy question appears on The 1% Club, it might be worth thinking twice before assuming you already know the answer!
