The 1% Club’s Animal Puzzle Sparks A Heated Debate! Lee Mack asked contestants to find six animals hidden in PHEASANTORTOISEALION — but viewers were divided when the answer was revealed. Some insisted one of the creatures shouldn’t count as an animal, while others rushed to defend the show’s answer! Could YOU spot all six and settle the debate?

The 1% Club Sparks Heated Debate Over ‘Incorrect’ Animal Puzzle – But Would You Have Got It Right?

A seemingly straightforward animal puzzle on The 1% Club has divided viewers after Lee Mack revealed an answer that some fans insisted was wrong. The challenge asked contestants to identify how many animals were hidden within a continuous string of letters, but the debate quickly shifted from spotting the creatures to deciding what actually counts as an animal.

The discussion unfolded during the latest episode of Lee Mack’s popular ITV quiz, which aired on Saturday. While the answer was intended to be six, some viewers argued that the wording of the question made the result questionable.

A Word Puzzle Leaves Viewers Divided

The 1% Club brings together 100 contestants competing for a potential £100,000 prize. Players must work through 15 logic-based questions, with each round becoming progressively more difficult.

Unlike conventional quiz programmes that often test general knowledge, the show’s questions are based on a survey of 1,000 members of the public. Their responses determine the difficulty of each challenge, beginning with questions that 90% of people answer correctly and gradually progressing towards the final question designed for just 1%.

In the latest episode, contestants faced an unusual challenge involving a string of letters:

“Without reordering any letters, how many animals appear in the sequence below?”

The sequence displayed was:

PHEASANTORTOISEALION

Quiz question: How many animals are in "PHEASANTORTOISEALION" without rearranging letters?

Players and viewers were invited to identify the animal names hidden within the letters without rearranging them. However, the question soon attracted attention for an unexpected reason: not everyone agreed with the definition of an animal.

When Lee Mack eventually revealed the answer, he counted six creatures: pheasant, sealion, ant, seal, tortoise and lion.

That explanation did not convince everyone watching at home.

One viewer took to social media to protest that an ant should not be included, while another argued that the question had confused animals with other categories of living creatures.

One critic wrote that a pheasant is a bird, an ant is an insect, and a seal and sea lion are mammals. They suggested that only the lion and tortoise should count if the question was specifically asking for animals, adding that the wording would have been clearer had it asked how many “creatures” were present.

Others expressed similar objections, with several viewers insisting that an ant is an insect rather than an animal.

Viewers Push Back Against the Criticism

However, plenty of fans disagreed with those complaints and defended the show’s answer.

Some pointed out that insects are indeed animals, meaning the ant was correctly included in the total. One viewer questioned why so many people were arguing otherwise, while another explained that insects belong to the animal kingdom and are classified as arthropods, alongside spiders, crustaceans, centipedes and millipedes.

The disagreement turned the puzzle into a lively discussion about basic biological classification. Although the sequence itself contained six animal names, the question exposed a difference between everyday assumptions and scientific definitions.

For those supporting the programme, Mack’s answer was correct: an ant is an animal, even though it is also classified as an insect.

Five Contestants Face the Final Challenge

Later in the episode, attention turned to the show’s final question, with five contestants remaining in the competition.

They were offered a choice: take a share of £10,000, giving each player £2,000, or continue playing in the hope of winning the larger prize.

One contestant, Christopher, decided to accept his £2,000 and leave the game. The remaining players chose to take on the final challenge.

Their question was:

“The words below share a specific pattern. Why could VOTING also be part of the group?”

The three words provided were:

  • Bandleader
  • Nickelodeo
  • Silverback

Only one contestant attempted to answer, but their response was incorrect. As a result, nobody who continued playing managed to win the prize money.

Lee Mack, 56, then explained the connection. Each word contained the name of a metal hidden within its letters: lead in Bandleader, nickel in Nickelodeo, silver in Silverback and tin in VOTING.

The pattern was based on finding metal names within the words, rather than their overall meanings.

Fans Call the Final Question the ‘Easiest Ever’

The outcome prompted another wave of reactions online, with some ITV viewers surprised that none of the remaining contestants had identified the pattern.

Several fans described the final challenge as one of the easiest 1% questions they could remember. One viewer said they had expected the answer to be more complicated because the connection seemed so obvious, while another claimed to have spotted it within five seconds.

A third fan revealed that their 12-year-old had also worked it out by recognising the metals hidden in the words. Others similarly questioned why the contestants had struggled with what they considered a relatively straightforward challenge.

The reactions highlighted the contrasting ways audiences approach the show’s puzzles. A question that seems obvious to some viewers can still prove difficult for contestants facing the pressure of a live countdown and the possibility of walking away empty-handed.

Other Quiz Questions That Have Left Viewers Stumped

The animal debate and final challenge were not the only puzzles to attract attention from television quiz fans.

Earlier, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? viewers criticised a question that asked which letter had never begun the surname of a Best Actress Oscar winner from the 2000 awards ceremony onwards.

Host Jeremy Clarkson gave player Glen four possible answers: G, K, M and W. With £32,000 already secured, Glen had to make a guess and selected G. His answer was correct, with Nicole Kidman, Frances McDormand and Kate Winslet among the actresses who had won the award during the period in question.

Another The 1% Club challenge asked viewers to work out Amir’s birthday based on two other dates. Edna’s birthday was given as 6 April, while Jen’s was 15 October. Contestants had to determine which day in January belonged to Amir.

The solution involved counting the position of each date within the wording of the question. The 6th corresponded to the sixth word, while the 15th matched the fifteenth word. Following the same pattern, Amir’s birthday was January 24.

Meanwhile, ITV’s daytime quiz The Chase once challenged a contestant to identify which food someone with a nightshade intolerance should avoid. The options were sweetcorn, potatoes and carrots. Player Steve selected sweetcorn, but the correct answer was potatoes.

These challenges demonstrate how quiz shows can turn seemingly familiar subjects into tests of careful reading, observation and logical thinking.

The 1% Club airs on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.
